I would like to attempt to use my beater elco as a learning tool. I would like to learn how to do good body and paint work. Could someone please steer toward a book(s) or video(S) to teach me step by step basics. Any tips to the first timer like where to start and what tools to buy, etc???

Thanks

Thomas, my advice to you is to inroll in a course at a local technical school, There you will learn all you need to know and classes are cheap and well worth the money. After all I would hate to see you waste time on the elke that would be a sin ! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Find a auto paint store that has a good staff and stick with them for all your supplies. They will answer all your questions and really know what to do and what you will need.

Yeah that's one thing I have helping me out. A really good auto paint supply store in the area. BUT i still have a problem, I have nowhere to spray paint and also I've never used a spray gun before. so there are no videos or books worth buying? I put a bodywork tool set on my Christmas list will see what the fat man brings though

Happy Holidays

This is a URL to a site that has a lot of very talented body and paint pros visitors. The guy that hosts the site has a few videos that I hear are very good "newbe" tapes. Check it out. http://www.autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/config.pl?

i dont claim to be an expert but my son and i started our first project/my 68 malibu/5 years ago . We made mistakes and had to redo several things but the car turned out real nice. First you need a good paint store to deal with for supplies and equipment. Find a good sales rep that will help you . get familiar with their products, from self etch to top coats . You will find that you need a good compressor, air file , da sander , cut off tools. If possible get a good brand name on the sanders such as Hudgins because they are quiet ,use less air and last a long time. Keep practicing, practice makes perfect. when filing dents dont put filler in just the dent put it an area several times the size of the dent , block it to a feather edge, learn how to use urethene primer fillers , block sand , etc. REMEMBER THE two part products are dangerous to your central nervous system use proper respirators spraying and sanding . You may be able to rent a paint booth from a local body shop to paint in Try to find a decent body man thst dont mind giving advise After you learn the products, do a couple of cars you will be surprised at how good you really are .. Good luck and Merry Christmas also you can use the lower end paint ,sealers, uro primers etc, until you get the hang of it. example Dupont uro filler is about 175$ per gallon , some the lower end uro is about 75 and will do a good job. since you will be making mistakes dont use
the high dollar products to practice with
