: Two-toning '65 Z-16
GrnWht65 May 11th, 00, 5:18 AM I'm working on a model kit of a '65 SS396 Z-16 (Can't afford a REAL one...). I'd like to two-tone the body, but I have a few questions. First, were the Z-16's even OFFERED in two-tone? Every picture I've ever seen shows a red car. Second, if they were offered in two-tone, was the paint line in the same location as on other '65 Malibus? And, were the paints offered in the same color combos on the Z-16's as on the other Chevelles from that year (specifically, Cypress Green with a Beige top)? If anyone has any info that could help me out here (pictures would be FANTASTIC!) you can e-mail me at dlg007@cyberhighway.net , or post your replies here. I'd love for my model Z-16 to look as realistic as possible - this is my dream car. Thanks, all.
DZAUTO May 11th, 00, 6:03 AM SORRY! Only solid colors for Z-16s. Blue, red, yellow were for sure colors. Can anyone else help with Z-16 colors?
If you are a Z-16 lover (as I am), then you know, that basically, these cars only came one way. Also, you probably know that only 201 were built, and it is strongly believed that one was a convertible. Very few options were available.
Usually there is one or more at the Chevelle events, especially Chevellabration.

Tom is right about the 3 colours offered. That, plus with or without a black vinyl top ('65 was the 1st year for Chevelles with a vinyl top; it came online mid-year). Since Chevy built them as promotional vehicles and controlled who got them, it is highly unlikely that they took special orders for paint. Chevy showcased the am/fm multiplex stereo (standard!), the newly-optional vinyl top, the new mag-style wheel covers, and the damn fine Mark IV engine.
If they did offer a 2-tone (they didn't on the Z16) they would've used the RPO D99 2-tone mouldings, also used with the vinyl roof. The paint break lines would be at the mouldings.
BTW, interior colours were limited to black, parchment/black, red.

69SSGA May 11th, 00, 10:17 AM I also remember a black with white interior one at chevellabration last year. Is black also an option for the Z-16?
MoeMan May 11th, 00, 4:18 PM Ok- I have seen the red, the yellow, and the black Z-16s. I have never seen or heard of a blue one?
I believe they were only available in red, yellow, and black. I think you're right, MoeMan. There were 6 at CB last year.

Rode shotgun in the ONLY Z16 convertible made.
I used as a reference the article on Z16's by Keith Maney in the Year One catalog. But then there could be exceptions.

DZAUTO May 13th, 00, 7:06 AM I mentioned blue, because at Super Chevy in Dallas, back in the 80s a guy had one there. Of course it could have been painted or maybe it was black and looked like a dark blue. Maybe a clone?
