: I'm home from my trip.
Adam Loose Jun 5th, 06, 10:28 AM Well,I actually got home saturday from New Mexico, but I slept most of the day.I didn't have time to get on the computer on sunday either.
I was nervous on the 1st flight from Philly to Dallas, but the 2nd flight from Dallas to El Paso was a bit better. But for the return flights,I wasn't nervous at all,I actually fell asleep on the Dallas to Philly flight.I'll post some pics later this week when I have more time.
Thanks to all that offered any tips and suggestions, all helped.
SS_Dave Jun 5th, 06, 11:01 AM Made it back, huh?

Oh, and, glad the plane didn't crash.

That's exactly what I tell any nervous pax I have. I let them know I love living and if there is ever any problem/emergency that I'm gonna do everything I can to get myself on the ground safely and they can feel safe right along with me. I also make sure they know that we go through pretty intense simulator and ground training every six months and there isn't an emergency I haven't alreay experieced at least once in my career...in the sim. Well, except for a structural failure!
BTW....glad you had a safe trip!

That's pretty cool stuff, how do you obtain that info?
Where it says "kts" for the speed..........what does that mean? What mph does the plane fly at?Are you a pilot or something?

Ancient Chinese secret!;)
Yes, I'm a pilot for a living. This is all public info that you just need to knwo where to go to get it. Check this out, it's the route your plane flew.... http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL1411/history/20060527/1910ZZ/KDFW/KELP
KTS = knots and it is the unit we use for speed in aviation. 1 knot = 1.15 mph if you care to convert it. I'd say the "average" speed for a commercial jet is about 440 kts or so and that equates to about 530 MPH (I don't have a calculator with me). Of course that speed isn't correct for any wind so it's called true airspeed, your ground speed will be different. Confused yet?:D

So who do you fly for?
No,not confused.It made sense to me.Thanks.
BarefootDave Jun 8th, 06, 10:30 AM So who do you fly for?
.
I'm a corporate pilot for GEICO Auto Insurance. I currently fly a Lear 31, Lear 35 and a brand new Lear 45XR. I grew up in Chester County and flew for several years out of Reading, Pottstown and Chester County airports. I know your area well and still miss it!
Adam Loose Jun 8th, 06, 10:53 AM That's cool.I bet you have good insurance.
Your not missing much in my area though...........except for going to Maple Grove raceway maybe!!!

I definitely miss Maple Grove! I started racing there when I was 15 in 1979, before they even had a concrete starting line. My dad would drive or tow my 69 Camaro up there for me and I'd race it after we told them I was 16...that was a blast and definitely the start to my muscle car obsession!
ricks_67 Jun 8th, 06, 4:55 PM Welcome back Adam, Great Pics. I was alittle nervous the first time I flew too.
One time I flew out to Phoenix but it was at night, the pilot told us to look out the window as we crossed the Mississippi and all the lit up area was St.Louis.
Adam Loose Jun 9th, 06, 10:02 AM Dave,
What MPH do the commercial planes go during the takeoff, like what speed do they obtain on the ground, and just before takeoff?
I was surprised at how fast and how hard the plane was pulling on the ground and just before takeoff.
Rick,
I was glad all my flights were during the day,I think I would've been more nervous flying at night.

Adam,
It really depends on the weight, temperature and your elevation above sea level (density altitude) but for most jets with a clean wing (no slats, flaps or other leading edge lift devices) you're probably doing about 160 MPH when you feel the pilot rotate the nose up (Vr) and then most jets climb at 250 kts below 10,000 ft (that's the speed limit) and between 275-320 knots in the climb above 10,000 ft. The takeoff speeds are lower by about 15-20 MPH when you have a lot of leading edge lift devices like some airliners have.
rthlc Jun 9th, 06, 11:00 PM Cool pics, I recognized Elephant Butte before I even read the caption. One of my best friends and I used to camp in the desert overlooking the reservoir a couple times a year before he passed. Brought back a lot of very good memories.
Thank you for posting.
