Does anyone know where I can get replacement molding clips for the side trim used on 65 Malibu's? They are plastic, push-in style (holes in body are oval), and then the trim which is about an inch wide snaps into the upper and lower edges of the clips.

Thanks everyone

I just got a fender from a 65 malibu with side molding.

The clips were metal and were "S" shaped, with a threaded stud to go through the sheetmetal. The holes in the sheetmetal were round. They all looked original.

I know this doesn't help you find any, but there may have been more than one type that will work for you.

As far as suppliers, have you tried all the usual spots (ground up, OPG, muscle factory, southwestern classics, true connections, ...)?

You got me. My 64 Malibu has ROUND holes fron the rear at the Mid body line,
you 65 should have the hols just below the mid body line . The soap dish molding insert you are speaking of. It reminds me of the one's that 64 SS use, by pushing in the oblong holes tha trun front to back at the top of the fender, door and 1/4's. Then the trim clips tha are on the moldings push into them. If this is the kind you are seeking about 1" long X 3/8" wide. Muscle Factory has them and I assume OPG or True Conections
would.

Glen,
I have the same old plastic clips, too.
Many of mine broke when I removed the molding. I sent a sample to "Restoration
Specialties & Supply" in Pennsylvania. They
sent me a new plastic kind that I think will
work, but haven't got that far yet.
Their phone number is 814-467-9842. Email me if you want the part# they sent me. It's impossible to find the old plastic kind that push in.

I probably should have been a little more specific:

This is a 65 Malibu (not SS) that has 1 1/2 inch wide molding down the body centerline, three pieces each side (fender, door, rear quarter). All pieces have a 1/2 inch wide groove down the middle that's painted black.

The front fender uses the metal spring wire type clips that have a round stud and are fastened to the fender with a gray plastic large-flange nut.

The door and rear quarter use push-in style white plastic clips that are 1 1/4 inch high, 1 inch long, and have oval shaped push-in studs which are 1/2 inch long and 3/8 inch high. These push in to the body and are held in place by a small 'nub' on the top and bottom of the oval stud. There is also a small flat o-ring made out of that flexible white lens gasket material (but thinner) placed on the oval stud before it's pushed on the body that seals the hole once the clip is in place. The molding then snaps into a small groove along the top and bottom edge of the clips.

It is these clips I'm trying to get more of, I've checked with all of the normal resto places (Year one, OPG, NPD, Ausleys, Harmons, Paddock, etc.) all to no avail.

Anybody got any ideas?

Im doing a 65 SS resto now, I had a 65 Malibu. Anyway I was digging through some of my "parts" and found at least 2 of the side molding retainers you need. If you want them, they're yours free. Just send me an email if you're interested. It'll cost you postage is all. I know where theres a 65 Malibu sitting too. I'll check and see if I can get some off of it for you, but it'll cost you http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif.
