Use the IGN terminal at the fuse box, you only want the voltmeter to have power when the key is on

Thanks I got it,, ,While Im prooving my inabtness with electrical, let me ask this.. When certain items require a power sourse, its not necessary to run a hot, red, wire all the way to the fuse panel ,right?, I can go to any red wire that I can identify as being correct,on with key,,,,thats needed. IM only talking about little drawing things.ie,a trunk light, etc. My problem is how to connect new wires to the fuse panel , is there a special item sold that allows me to tie in to the glass fuse? thanks again,

Depends on what you are wiring and how much the item draws.

No. Most "reds" are main feed wires and are unfused, plus they have power with the key off too. Something like a trunk light can be tapped off the dome light, which is routed through the trunk, 18g orange on a 70.

Don't bother with fuse taps. The easiest place is right at the fusebox terminals. There are 4 terminals at the fusebox for added stuff. (see pic below) They are marked BAT, ACC, IGN and LPS. The BAT terminal is always hot, the ACC terminal is only hot when the key is in the accessory or on position, IGN terminal is only hot when the key is in the on position, LPS terminal is only hot when the parking or headlamps are on. To connect to these terminals, you need a standard female spade connector you can get at any auto parts store. For high draw items, like electric fans, fuel pumps, stereo amps ect...get power from the horn relay or battery, and control it with a relay.

The fuse panel has 4 spade terminals in the middle to provide for expansion. The problem comes in when something has already been added...

You have to be a bit careful when tapping into existing wires. You do not want to overload the wire/circuit and either melt something or pop fuses due to an overload.
