Just looking for generic thoughts and opinions on mixing (with catalyst) and spraying PPG DP 90 (same as DP 40.) Also, in what proportions do I mix them?(cat and paint) Will I have a problem spraying it with a touch up gun?
thanks,

Brandon

Brandon, I used DP 40, and liked it very much...Not sure about the ratio now, it was about 3 years ago, but I think it was 1:1.....it should be on the can...and I used a touch up gun to spray many areas, worked fine for me. John

The ratio is 1:1. You can mix the different colors together to get different colors. Also just make sure that you DONT mix the different catalyst together.

If I remember right the numbers for the catalysts were 401 and 402. The 402 was called the fast which allowed for a faster topcoat time. The 401 had a pot life of around 48 hours or more and the 402 was around 8 hours. The pot life is how long the product is usable before it must be thrown out. The bad thing about the 401 was that it must set up for what is called induction time which was 30 mins no induction time was needed for the 402. So after you have mixed your dp 90 with the 401 it must set up for 30 mins before you spray it.

Brandon, are you talking about the old DP40 (now discontinued) or DP40 LF. There is a difference. The DP-LF is lead free and is mixed 2:1 instead of 1:1 on the old DP.

Thanks, and Black rat, your right, it is the LF, I also just found the ratio on the side of the can, what do you know, I was trying to read all of the directions and what not on the back, when I should have been looking for pictures. LOL, I suppose PPG interprets us car guys to well. I think this should be a lesson to all, forget the directions, the pictures are what matter. Anyway, thanks for the help. Any more opinions on this primer or using it with a touch up gun?

Thanks again,
Brandon

Brandon, You should have no problem spraying DP-LF Epoxy out of a touch-up gun. As long as it is a fairly small area. Ed

Blackrat,

have you used any of the dp. primers since they reformulated it? i was using it when they first changed it and it wasn't near as good as the old stuff. it does'nt have the semi-gloss finish and it was completely flat. it also didn't seem to adhere very well.

the company i used to paint for did adhesion tests on it and it wasn't even close to the old stuff. the dp was considered the top coat. after that they had everything powdercoated.

i use an epoxy primer made by trans-star i mixes 1to1 just like the old dp and dupont prime-n-seal. after this stuff cures it takes a hammer and chisel to get it off i have been very pleased with it.

Hey, 68racer, yes I have used DP-Lf since they reformulated it, and you are correct, it does not spray the same as the old DP. This is the most common complaint that I hear with my job as a tech. rep for a large PPG distributor.
When it became lead free, it also became a little thicker, add that to the new mix ratio of 2:1 instead of 1:1 and it left alot of people longing for the old product.
You need to pay more attention to the type of gun used anymore, and keep in mind that 2 lighter coats may be better than 1 heavy one. That is the problem that I see most is people put it on too heavy, or don't have a gun that can atomize it well. You can also add 1/2 part of DT reducer into the mix to help.
All in all it is still probably one of the best products us old car guys can have, . Thats my story.............. Ed
