this peeves me off bad.........

about 15 years ago (when me & my friends were all broke) 4 of us go in together & buy a cherry picker (3 friends & one of their fathers)..... we paid $150.00 for it back then......... anyway, i'm getting ready to pull the 396 outta the truck so i call my buddy Tom..... "dude, can i get the cherry picker?" " its not here, its at JC's" "OK"...... call JC, "hey JC, are you using the cherry picker or can I grab it" "I don't have the cherry picker here, its at Tom's" "no, i just called tom, he said it was at your place" "no.... i'll call my boy & see if its there" "naw, i'll call him JC, Thanks"...... "yo kev, ... sup? hey, can i grab the cherry picker?" "yeah, but it ain't here, its at Toms" "no, i just called Tom's & he said it was at your dads place so i called him & he said it wasn't at his place...... and since it wasn't at toms, it must be over to your place" "no man, it ain't here...... are you sure it ain't over your place?" "yes, i'm sure its not over here" "man, well, i'll call dad & check with him again" "OK".................................................. ... ring ring "hello?" "are you sure you don't have it over there?" "I am positive" "well, tom said you were the last one to use it" "I probably was the last one to use it, but since I had to make room to stain all the trim i took it back to toms....... you loaned my engine stand to your buddy & said you couldn't get it back from him so you bought me another stand.... did you loan it to him? does he still have it?" "no, i loaned him your stand but not the picker" "then how'd you guys load the the 455 into & out of the truck...... by hand?" "yeah".......................

so, how do you lose a cherry picker? pitch in and buy a "community" tool

well, off to the store in the AM to buy a new one :(

The guy I bought my picker from used to loan it out to everybody and anybody, sure enough it came up missing. He was driving through an area nowhere near his house and spotted it sitting in a strangers back yard. He had painted it orange, no mistake on ownership. He knocked on the door, some guy comes out and they had a friendly discussion, before long they figured out who had originally borrow the picker and how many times it had changed hands. I replaced the ram, it was worn out, and also replaced the casters. I let the guy use a couple times after I bought it and it came back each time with a broken caster. He called a third to borrow it, told him someone already had it. Haven't had to buy anything for it since then.

Yeah that sucks. I am usually real guarded about loaning things. I get requests for my enclosed and my open trailers but only loan them to a couple good friends and family. More than happy to haul stuff for folks for a fee :D

We used to have the group cherry picker then started renting it out for a case of beer, worked good for awhile then it vanished . Now my buddy has one down the street and i've used it more he ever has, I felt bad and offered to buy it off him but he said that's cool don't worry about it if he needs it he'll come and get it from me HA HA !!

I've had my friends co-workers cherry picker for almost two years :D I was going to bring it back for like two months, but something always came up or he was busy etc etc... Now he moved and doesn't have room for it, and sold all his toys. Its been sitting in the corner at work forever, but he just said to hang on to it till he needs/has room for it again.

I'm gonna need one in the future but hate to buy one. I figure there are thousands of them out there sitting in garages and not being used until i read this post that is.
Maybe i can find a used one for cheap.

OFBG sounds like you got off cheap only out $37 in 15 years. i just bought one from my brother in-law and a engine stand for $100 he only used them once. community tools useally come up missing. i would say if toms buddy didn't have a stand he didn't have a picker either. like to see them unload a big block by hand

i was thinking the very same thing. has to be either tom or the butler and people like us who work on old cars and rent or borrow cherry pickers dont normally have butlers (case solved)

Have a neighbor.Think he has a list of what everyone on street has so doesn't need for himself.Have to watch him if doesn't bring back or you go get will end up thinking its his. He's an engineer, about a 1 minute memory on certain things.

Well I have a chain hoist that I have no idea who the owner is.
I borrowed it from a high school buddy 30 years ago who borrowed it from a brother-in law who borrowed it from the used car lot where ?? left it.
A friend and I went in partners on the cherry picker but he passed away.

I've had a cherry picker for about 12 years now. Used to lend it out, but it'd come back messed up. Ended up replacing the ram a couple times. First time, I took the ram back, got a new one from the place I bought it, since it was less than a year old. Don't know how exactly, but a friend's son was playing with the valve, and it wouldn't work anymore. Second time, guy who borrowed it was a friend of a friend, he went on vacation for two weeks, left a v6 hanging 2' in the air the whole time. The ram wouldn't lift an engine above that point on it's own. You'd have to use a floor jack with blocks to help it over that point, then it'd work fine. Bought a new ram, he told me he'd pay for it. 6 years later, he still owes me $110. Karma has paid him numerous visits for his ways, though. ;)

I hate borrowing stuff from people. Especially big dollar stuff like that. I rented a hoist to take my old engine out, then several months later an acquaintance offered his. I always try to get things back in better shape than when I borrowed them, you know, like fixing a broken whatever, put a new spark plug in the lawn mower, full tank of gas, etc..

I bought a cherry picker about 15 years ago and used it a couple times. I loaned it to an uncle that owned a garage. He closed the shop a few years later and sold all the equipment including my picker. I just bought another one last year.

What does OFBG mean?

You should do what we do in the Military, make a log book and write down the name, number, unit and what they borrowed from you and have the person sign it for responsibility purposes. :)

Sorry OFBG, I've got your cherry picker. It's broken now, and the hydraulic cylinder is missing, but you're welcome to drive to MN to pick it up if you still want it. ;) :D

The best thing I have found is to borrow/loan tools among people who have lots of tools. The people who lots of tools appreciate them and their cost. They will tend to bring things back in good working order. Never loan a tool to someone who owns only a claw hammer and a pair of pliers.

I had one guy tell me a ladder was his, and a couple of occasins of stuff never coming back.
I make anybody that wants to borrow anything sign it out, then when it comes back we line it out, usually I put a date also.

My friend borrowed a body spoon, it was gone for two years, I asked him one day if I could get it back, he told me he brought it back, showed him the list, bingo. I have kept lists for 30 years, my dad told me about it, we used to have a lot of stuff, nothing real expensive, just stuff.

The best way with a list is to make them write it down, then watch you when you line it out.

I used to have a next door neighbor that would tend to borrow tools, etc and then turn around and let someone else (usually his father or brother) take it from him for a few weeks. I was always having to hunt down my stuff.

I bought my own cherry picker 6 years ago I knew he'd wanna borrow it sooner or later and didn't want to go looking for it at his father's. I scored a 40' chain with these HUGE links. Less than a month later he asked to borrow it "so he could move some heavy stuff in his garage" (yeah right). I knew the first second he got it would be at his father's place. So, I chained one end to my basketball hoop pole in my driveway and the other to my cherry picker so he could still use it in HIS own garage or driveway. He didn't look happy about it either.

Its funny, I got it back within a hour and I don't even think he used it (hmm... I wonder why). He never said anything to me about it, but he RARELY borrowed another other than my slide-hammer after that.

Ughh, Hey OFBG, after reading all these posts, mabey I should rethink my offer to loan you mine. I can't seem to find it rite now, but when I do, I'll let you know.

Just kidding. It's here if you want to use it.

OFBG,
I live in Pontiac. I have one you can have. It does need a new ram, but
otherwise in pretty good shape. I have other equipment at my shop now
and this thing has been taking up space in the garage for years. P.M if you
want it.

Hey Mark, what's wrong with the ram? Does it just not pick up a load anymore? If the seals on the cylinder itself aren't leaking, it should be good. After two rams, and not wanting to buy another one, I fixed mine good the last time I tried to use it and it wouldn't play well. I changed the o-ring on the small pump rod, right inside the cap for the pump portion. It was sucking in air from that o-ring. Works great now.

It needed a reseal kit, which can be had, but a Harbor Freight ram is less
trouble and under $40, so I scrapped it. I have since acquired an A-frame
rig with a chain fall, and I have a forktruck at my shop also, so lifting is a non-issue.

Exactly, I have lent out many of my Snap On and Mac tools to other guys in the shop I work at because I know they dont need a reason to steal them. Usually because they broke thiers. I know that they would do the same for me if I asked. Perhaps this is not the same thing.

TW, thanks for the offer...... it is very generous of you

I pm'ed you and as you know, the motors out & on the stand........ thats another story in itself......... the engine stand that my buddy kevin replaced was just pulled out of the carton and assembled  if i were an 11 year old working on briggs & stratton engines it'd be tall enough for me...... this thing literally stands as tall as my knee (double  ) I ended up borrowing a stand and calling kev back...... i was told my stand is in standish........ "I don't care..... get it BACK!!!

BTW, this is Thorps cousin so it makes it even worse since Thorp is a stand up kinda guy

yup. my father used to do that and taught me the same thing....... ALWAYS return it better than you got it........ sometimes it shames the owner into taking better care of his own stuff ;)

we think alike. I have the same thing with strip magnets on the back. It's attached to my wall box, but I'll take it off and move around the garage with it, so it's portable.

My neighbor doesn't usually borrow my tools, but he has no problem asking me for help and not intending to ever return the favor. I've rewired his garage and shed, put in undercabinet lights, and layed in his 3' deep crawlspace for about 2 1/2 hours reinforcing the floor under his toilet so his 300 pound aunt wouldn't fall through the floor the next day. He's a tree trimmer by trade, and when I mentioned that the 45' trees in my front yard were dead he says, "I'll top them out for you for $150 if I can have the firewood and you stack it in your backyard".
I wasn't even soliciting him for an offer to do it but it really p*&^ed me off. I've gotta go, I just remembered he owes me 5 quarts of 10w30 that he was "going to replace" about 6 months ago. Sorry for venting!
