: Ingersol Rand Compressor Big Enough?
66n67 Oct 8th, 04, 2:37 AM Can anyone think of a reason I would need to get a 7hp IR compressor rather than a 5hp?
I plan on media blasting, d/a sanding, painting, etc.
What is the difference between the Type 30 vs TS4L5 ?
BTW: Sears has the TS4L5 for $999 w/2yr warr
I saw Northern went up to $1099

Donnie1 Oct 8th, 04, 3:23 AM if your going to blast i would get the 7.5 hp with the air cooled after cooler.(CUTS YOUR CONDENSATION BY ABOUT 70%)
24 cfm verses the 15 cfm on the 5 hp.
the 5 hp would never get a chance to rest.
ya its not cheap about $1900 but youll never have to buy another one.
i like to buy things one time not two or three.
540cutlaSS Oct 8th, 04, 11:59 AM everything else being equal, Get the biggest tank you can.
BillK Oct 8th, 04, 12:21 PM Mark,
Really depend on how much blasting you want to do. We have a 7 1/2 hp 120 gal tank at the shop and it even cannot keep up with the glass beader for more than about 10 minutes. We don't usually run it any longer than that, but if you are doing a lot of parts you might. Look at the cfm requirement of the blast cabinet or blaster you are thinking of buying, then size the compressor accordingly. Size of the tank really does not matter that much when blasting ... once the pressure goes down the pump still has to keep up with the cfm required by the tool you are using.
66n67 Oct 8th, 04, 10:38 PM Thanks Guys for the info,
Heck I thought I was going big!
Donny, can you suggest a source for such a compressor? Here is a 7.5hp 80gal 24.3cfm@175
http://www.mytscstore.com/detail.asp?pcID=1&paID=1010&sonID=469&productID=885
Where is the air cooled after cooler???
540ss I was thinking I would rather save the space and go with a 60gal? I could tie in my 20gal if necessary just for tank space.
Bill K, I really don't know what blaster I will get yet. Perhaps I need to start there? I have to blast all the little parts e-bk, steering column, seat tracks etc. I also have to blast the frame and body and trunk lid, etc.

I am planing on doing 2 cars and frames.
Do I have to buy 2 seperate blasters or can I get a pressure blaster and build a cabinet for in the garage? Obviously I would rather save some money here. Any suggestions????
Thank you very much!
Donnie1 Oct 9th, 04, 3:32 AM its called fully packaged, witch adds the air cooled after cooler, low oil shut down and automatic drain.
the air cooler is like a radiator it cools the air before it goes in the tank.

should be able to buy one for a little over $2000
when i bought mine it was $1950
call your local IR dealer and see what kind of a price theyll give you.
BillK Oct 9th, 04, 6:42 PM Mark,
I dont care what anyone says, you do NOT want to even think about doing the frame and body in any type of home shop environment. When I did the front part of the frame on my Chevelle we were in a different location and had 2 7 1/2 HP compressors running in parallel and it still was really not enough. The guy at the body shop next door to us went and rented a large dsl powered compressor to do his 63 Impala. It still took him close to a week working a few hours a day  And you dont even want to think about the mess it made.
So .. go ahead and get a blaster to do all your small parts etc, but farm out the frame and body. It will probably cost you less than you think and believe me it will be worth every penny.
PS .. if you dont believe me, find someone near you with a home setup and sk them to let you try blasting a few small pieces. See how lnog it takes and then decide on your own.
Just my opinion,
66n67 Oct 9th, 04, 8:45 PM Thanks for the additional info Donny and BillK.
OK I will not blast the body/frame.
I still need to clean up the steering column, front valance? etc. Some of these parts are large.
I would like to clean the inner fenders but I could get those done with the frame. Can I drop down to the 5hp unit? If I still need the 7.5 hp do you know how many amps that will take @ 220v?
Previous posts recommend blasters by TP. Do I need a foot pedal or is the finger trigger ok? I am starting to wonder if I need a blaster at all? As long as we're at it I was planning on building a rotiserie. Do you think that is worth it or should I just do the work on the frame possible with 6" extensions on the mounts?
Thanks for the advise, I am at a critical point deciding how to begin.
BillK Oct 9th, 04, 9:16 PM Mark,
I have found that blast cleaning parts is sort of like porting cylinder heads. Guys really think they can do it at home, but once they start and realize how tedious, dirty, and noisy the work is ... they wish they had never though of it. I dont know about your area, but around Washington DC there are several places that blast and powder coat parts for very reasonable prices, especially if your time is valuabe. By the time you are done buying all the equipment and the supplies I just dont think its worth it unless you are planning to do it as a business. If you are not doing any blasting, a 5hp compressor will be more than you need. I have a 30 year old 3hp Sears and it has done all I have ever needed at home, including painting my Wife's VW bug a bunch of years ago.
Donnie1 Oct 9th, 04, 10:45 PM Mark, i have this blast cabinet, great for doing all kinds of stuff. i farm out frames and large items.

Tractor Supply (TSC) has good prices on IR compressors around here.
GRN69CHV Oct 10th, 04, 9:45 AM When I did me frame, I power cleaned my exterior/ accessable areas with a small grinder and a knotted wire cup, then hit all the areas that needed attention (corners, welds, inside the rails) with the sandblaster. I use a 5HP single stage CI pump compressor. I will typlically only run it for 2 - 3 minutes then reposition myself. The compressor will catch up with you by doing it that way.
If I were to do it again, I would seriously consider sending the frame out to have the frame Galvanized instead, then use an inorganic zinc primer and finish with my top coat.
66n67 Oct 10th, 04, 10:08 PM That's a nice looking box Donny. I am considering that one smile.gif
GRN69CHV I thought about Galvanizing the frame also. The problem is they everyone paints over the Galvanizing. We had stairs at the lake that some times would be underwater. Granted this is a harsh enviroment but it lasted well for years until painted and then started to go down hill.
Von, thanks for the suggestion, I will check TCS out.
Thanks BillK. It sounds like you don't do any blasting. I live in a good neighorhood where blasting will certainly be frowned on and the cost is very high between compressors, cabinets, pressure drums but I can't help feeling I would like to try. Do you weld and paint?
BillK Oct 10th, 04, 10:20 PM Mark,
The only welding I do is on my own stuff. As far as painting goes, with the new paints, I really don't think you can do a good job at home without a booth so ... I leave it to a pro.
66n67 Oct 11th, 04, 3:11 PM Thanks BillK,
I am starting to wonder how far I should go and when I should farm out. This vehicle needs just about everything and I want to do it all myself but the cost of the tools compressor blasters welders, presses etc adds up in a hurry. I have two cars to do so there is some reason to get more stuff. I will probably continue doing this for 50 years. I have a 3hp 20gal CH but it won't even run a D/A.
Thanks for all your advise everyone and I hope to be driving along side one day (in a year)
GRN69CHV Oct 14th, 04, 2:35 PM C-nut,
There are a ton of places in Tx that do industrial blasting and coating. I deal with a company all the time in Houston {Womble Coatings}. They do all industrial work [mostly big pipe work, at least that is what I send them]. Probably a half hour's work to blast a frame with the equipment they have. I think they also have automated conveyor fed shot blast equipment.
66n67 Oct 16th, 04, 11:04 AM TRACTOR SUPPLY HAS 1 YEAR SAME AS CASE THIS WEEKEND!
I have been looking for an Ingersoll-Rand compressors.
I looked at
TS4L5 5hp 60gal 15.5@175 (Sears 999 3 day) (Northern 1099)21A
TS4N5 5hp 80gal 15.5@175 999 (mytscstore)in stock 21A
TS7N7.5 7.5hr 80gal 25@175 1699 (mytscstore)in stock 34A
TS51D5-FP 5hp 80gal 17@175 2261 (mytscstore) S.O.
TS7N7.5-FP 7.5hp 80gal 25@175 2333 (mytscstore) S.O.
I could not justify the fully packaged systems or
the 25cfm for my infrequent use +700
I decided on the TSC 80gal for 999 free 1yr finance.
If really necessary I can run my 3hp simultaneously.
Hope this helps someone else… Not trying to sell anything….
66n67 Oct 16th, 04, 11:20 AM Thanks GRN69CVY,
I want the ability to blast on a very limited basis. The reason for this is people say not to remove the frame braces (keeps body straight) when you replace the floor but then how to you clean them? Should I semi prep the frame (frame bushing supports) then put the body back on the frame, then remove the floor and trunk then take it to get blasted? I will check out the industrial blast places, there is a soda blaster here in Austin but I guess I need sand for the rusty frame?
Thanks for the reference Womble Coatings-Houston
I will look local and may use them if willing.
Now off to get my compressor YA BABY!
