Hey Guys, I'm in the process of stripping all of my '71 malibu and doing some small rust and ding repairs. Here is what I plan on using:

-Rage Xtreme body filler
-Dupont Variprime #615S
-Dupont URO primer filler #1120S
-ChromaPremier Sealer - or is there another alternative?

The topcoat will probably be a SS urethane, but I'm also thinking about going with one of the Dupont Hot Hues.

Anyway, is there anything special I need for welded areas? Or can I use the Rage Xtreme filler over it?

Can Variprime be sprayed over my Xtreme body filler, or do those areas need to be masked off?

How much of the Variprime, URO, and Sealer will I need?

Thanks!

-Adam

I've also been looking into evercoats new Featherfill G2 polyester primer - how would this compare to the URO I had spec'd - which would be best to use?

Also, is Evercoats URO primer the same stuff as Dupont?

Adam, I'm assumimg your going to cut out the rusty area and weld in or bond new sheetmetal patches in the openings. If you weld, I advise to put a coating of fg resin on the welds before applying the Evercoat Rage. That helps keep moisture from wicking through from the back and soaking into the Rage. Also where you can, coat the backside of the metal and weld with primer or POR-15. I did mine like this with butt welds 5 years ago and no problems so far. I think if I ever do another car I'll try panel adhesive to attach the patches.

Von,

Good point on the adhesive, I had forgotten about that product - I may give that a shot instead.

The main areas for repair are the lower rear window corners under where the vinyl top used to be, and a small hole in the front passenger side fender.

I'll use por-15 on the backside too.

Thanks Von!

Adam, I think you made some good choices!
The Xtreme filler is way too sweet.

Your primer choices with 615S and 1120S are great. I think those are probably some best products out there, I really enjoyed using those products.

Yes your variprime can be sprayed over the filler, dont hose it on a light misting wont hurt nothing. A qt of variprime will do the whole car and then some!!

Depending on your bodywork skills and overall condition of the car a gallon of URO prime will do. It mixes in a ratio of 4:1:1 You will also need to buy the 1125S activator and 1130S convertor.

Know nothing about yout sealer choice, I used Velvaseal, but thats been about 6yrs ago.

The URO from dupont and evercoat NOT the same product.

The evercoat product is a polyster primer, basically its a sprayable from the bondo. It has more fill then a regular urethane primer(1120S).

If you have a nice clean straight car I think the poly primer is a tad overkill. But each to their own.

The chroma premier sealer is just about the best sealer I have ever used, very hard and solvent resistant. Make sure your supplier mixes the right valueshade for your color, You will need no more than a quart for a complete exterior. I will be trying the Evercoat G2 shortly.
