: Has anyone seen a Hugger Orange '70 SS-396?
iroc86 May 31st, 06, 12:01 PM I'm trying to track down a '70 Chevelle SS-396 that my parents purchased new in 1970 (and sold in 1972). The only records I have is a dealer price quote and a service receipt, which fortunately shows the VIN number. It's either 136370B165352 or 136370B105352. I can't be certain because one of the sixes looks like a zero.
The car was ordered with Hugger Orange paint and white racing stripes, 396 engine (not such which one), Super Sport package, cowl induction, Posi, power steering, and air conditioning.
My mom's been talking about this car for a long time now and trying to find it has really piqued my interest. We're in the Pittsburgh, PA area so it might still be nearby. Has anyone seen a car like this?
(Yes, it's really towing that '67 Camaro. My dad used to drag race in the early '70s).

Dragn70 May 31st, 06, 12:34 PM I saw something on tv or a in a mag not too long ago about a hugger orange 70 and how rare it was because of the by order only color. May be your car.
Dave Birdwell May 31st, 06, 12:45 PM There are a few known LS6 cars that are Hugger Orange, but I never heard of a 396 car. Definately cool though!
RyanS May 31st, 06, 1:08 PM I saw a 70 Hugger Orange Chevelle at the Mecum Auction in Rockford this past weekend. I think it was an SS but I am not sure. I looked at it because it just looked out of place being hugger orange on a 70. There was a sign saying it was special ordered that color. There was a bunch 69-70 Chevelles , 67-69 Camaros and 70-71 Cudas and Challengers. I have never seen so many chevelles other than Chevellabration. You may be able to find it at www.mecumauction.com.

Thanks for the link, Ryan. I did find an orange SS at the Belvidere '06 show, but it was a 454. There was another one, a 396, from one of the '05 shows but it didn't have hood pins. Hoods can be changed, but I think attention to detail is going to help locate this one.
I appreciate the responses, guys :).
SS4Real May 31st, 06, 1:53 PM I would post this same message on the SYC board as the guys over there have a ton of information and it's amazing what they can find. I just got an e-mail last night on a SS that my family owned new in 1970. I would also post both of your pictures as well. Good luck!

Wow, that is pretty amazing! I'll post over there and see what happens.
THEL78ISGREAT May 31st, 06, 2:47 PM I love the way the Hugger orange looks on the 70s. Espcially with a white vinyl top and white interior.
Chris/75 May 31st, 06, 5:41 PM Awesome pictures! Good luck, hope you find her!

THEL78ISGREAT May 31st, 06, 6:08 PM Yenko.net. It stands for Yenko supercars, the logo for them is sYc, the Y is supposed to be read first and is in front/bigger on the logos on the car.
mr70 May 31st, 06, 7:30 PM Very Nice pix iroc.
The one at Mecum/Rockford here last week is an L-78,(one of only 2144) and was ordered with stripe delete and came std. w/RPO NA-9 Calif. emmisions.
Nick Lewis and a few others have owned that particular Chevelle in the past.
There are a few Monaco Orange 70 chevelles still snortin today. It was the same Orange shade used on the 69 Camaro's only they called it Hugger Orange on the Camaro,Monaco on the Chevelle..
I may be able to help you locate this.
What can your parents remember about the day they bought it?
What was the delivery date and selling Dealership?
Junkyard Dawg May 31st, 06, 7:53 PM Cool pic....she's squatting though....like the looks of the slots on the "Super Sniper"...
I'm from Pittsburgh area also. I can't remember seeing that Chevelle anytime in the past but then I wasn't looking for it. Maybe a guy that visits this site can help. His name here is Robinls5. He is from Pittsburgh area and has been dealing with Chevelles since at least 1970.
Don_Lightfoot May 31st, 06, 10:16 PM Andy - I left you a message over on the SYC Board.
Chuck Nixon May 31st, 06, 11:22 PM A friend here in Fort Worth currently is working on a ground up restoration on a hugger orange 70 SS 396 for a collector who purchased it recently. I checked the firewall tag and it is correctly numbered for the special order color. The owner was thinking it might be one of one but the one your Dad has squashes that idea. I will get the VIN number this weekend to compare to yours.
Chuck
iroc86 Jun 1st, 06, 12:58 AM mr70, I'll answer your questions on both forums so I get better coverage. The car was an automatic and purchased from Bauman Chevrolet in Wilkinsburg, PA. That dealership doesn't exist anymore but the main phone line now runs to Centennial Chevrolet. I called them a few days ago, but they denied ever having ties to Bauman, so I'm not sure what that means. The signing date on the quote/delivery slip was February 9, 1970 and the salesman was John Deveraux, Jr. I didn't know that about the paint naming differences, but the paper actually lists "special paint - Hugger Orange" under the Remarks section.
blm, I'll send Robinls5 a message and link him to this thread; maybe he has some information. Thanks for the contact!
I really appreciate that VIN comparison, Chuck!
Thanks for all of the help so far, and the interest in both cars. It would be awesome to reunite them :).
iroc86 Jun 1st, 06, 11:48 AM Just wanted to update this thread.... mr70 has done some checking and it seems the VIN is B165352 due to the signing date on the factory order and the build dates between the two VINs I supplied.
richr Jun 1st, 06, 3:37 PM Andy,
Glad to see you go the post going - hope you find it - looking forward to hearing good news.
Rich
1970SS Jun 1st, 06, 7:01 PM Just to let you know if the car had factory a/c it would be a 350HP 396 (L34) because you could not get a/c on the 375 HP 396 (L78).
