I am confused, I have a Mac HVLP gun that tells me to use 30-40 psi for painting bc/cc and the paint directions (Dupont CromaBase) say to use 8-10 psi?
Does any one know what I should set the psi to? I shot the underside of a hood and got alot of orange peal with 10 psi at the gun.
Any tips on the use of this gun would be appreciated.
thanks T.C.

Go with the 30-40psi at the input of
the gun, it probably ends up being 8-10psi
at the spray nozzle.

Is that where they are talking the 8 psi?
I thought it would be where the air entered the gun?
Would this cause very bad orange peel?
To much paint, not enough air?

I think you should grab some old body panels and experiment. Painting is more technique than science, try different pressures and go with what works. I have heard that the HVLP setups "spit" paint, so I imagine it is harder to get a smooth finish. I would mix the paint to its directions, and play around to find what works best for air pressure.

HVLP guns do blob the paint according to my painter. He uses HVLP for color coating due to the paint material savings, as color coats are more expensive. He uses a regular paint gun for clear coat as it gives a better finish. He does lots o work for me at the dealership and seems to know his business, so I tend to belive this.

Sharpe HVLP guns like the one I have use
40-50psi at the input to get 8-10psi at the
nozzle. I think to low of pressure would
give you orange peel. I would try about
40psi at the input, open your pattern and
flow controls open all the way and see
what kind of pattern the gun is leaving, if
you can adjust it to get a good pattern you
should get good results when painting.

Thank's to all!!!
I think all of you have good points to ponder.
The gun does kinda spit or blob the paint, the thing I cant imagin is why these guns are bragged upon so much to have such a lousy spray pattern?
There must be an answer? I think I will ask questions and plaY around with it some.
Thanks to all!!!
