Are the reproductions any good? Is one supplier better than the others?

For the love of god get some originals and polish them up... i bought these new repops this past fall... worst repop part i ever saw. and thats saying alot... not even close to fitting, were made of a metal about 1/2 the thickness of tissue paper, etc etc... definitely not recommeneded by me... i sold mine after ruining 2 of them and put my old ones back on... somehow they dont look so bad anymore!

Tom, original used sets show up on ebay on a regular basis, might want to check there regularly.

I'm with you on this one..... partially.
I think it may be better for members to post their opinions about the repro parts they have bought and the difficulties they have encountered with them. But not to voice a complaint about any particular vendor.
I personally have bought a couple items lately and have been very, very disappointed. I shy away from any repro stuff as a rule and always go out of my way to buy original OEM good used or mint used or NOS. It takes longer sometimes to find the pieces, but it is always better to use OEM original parts. (IMO)

To those who just plunk down their money for repro parts, I give you this challenge. Make the effort and take the time to hunt down the correct mint original parts and restore you car that way. Now, there is a challenge. But, the finished product will be heads above the rest ! Some of the restored "repro cars" I saw at the Pomona SCS were disgusting. To each his own, I guess.

Seeeeeeeeee,we need to know these things.I don't like trial and error when someone has already done trial and err before me.

It's stupid to keep doing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Do it once and let everyone know about it.DUHH

I agree 100%... if a part is junk i want to know, the same goes for stuff thats good... if something works well, thats good info to pass along as well... I don't mind sharing my own experiences with parts, and am thankful others let me know about the stuff i havent used.

Just wanted to add.
Very good used headlight bezels can be found at most any automotive swapmeets for $1-10 each. I've seen the buck-and-a-half prices ($150)for that repop junk, and I know I'd have a hard time paying that much for NOS GM !

Most of these aftermarket suppliers have a 1-800 #. You're on their dime. Ask them where the part is manufactured. If they hem and haw around and won't give you a specific answer, DON'T BUY IT ! More than likely they are trying to hide something. (fit/quality bad?)

We have been having our chrome and stainless parts redone, as we have heard that the Repops are not anything to brag about.

Ok, I'll try to explain as best I can although Al will do a much better job

We have no control over what ever lies anyone wants to post, the poster might be a 10 year old kid or just a troll or who knows who or what

If anyone got angry with anyone else about about any little thing what's to keep them from posting unfairly

There are always two sides to every story and anything posted would be pretty one sided and if the truth was really know might not even be the real story but the damage would be done anyway

As one example, just suppose a person "not too sharp" tried to install a perfect repo and didn't even know they were trying to put it on the wrong side or upside down or for what ever reason thought it was wrong
the first thing they would do is start bad mouthing the supplier and the supplier dosen't even get a chance to explain

I probably could go on and on but I think you get the general idea

Besides, I don't think we really want to leave ourselves wide open to litigation

Anyone can post a question about any part or supplier before they place an order and get any derogatory replies by email which solves all the problems above

Let me put in my 2 cents. On my 68's I always try to use NOS. On the full body off restoration that I'm doing right now, I have purchased alot of NOS parts and I'm having difficulty making some of them fit properly. Because I have five 68's I can compare one car to another and swap items. It is amazing how many different fit problems you can encounter. You can lay two original 68 GM parts side by side and see certain differences that would probably go un-noticed if I didn't have something else to compare with. It seems that no-one manufactures the same exact item even when they use the same blueprints. Things that make you go hhhmmm....

You know, everyone always says that, but any of the untouched, unrestored cars i've ever seen always have pretty spot-on panel fit, gaps, etc... for cars that were massed produced with ancient technology, youd be hard pressed to get a fender or door to fit much better than the factory installations. Look at old magazine shots of these cars when they were new... panel fit looks pretty good to me!
