Ever have a car you thought didn't like you? I find myself following an uncanny trail of repetitive problems.

Anyway, my wagon had no speedometer cable when I bought it. Purchased a new cable and rubber gormett............viola!! Speedometer worked.

After a short while it started to "chatter" on and off and the needle began to get "jumpy". As time went on, the chatter eventualy turned into a "LOUD shriek" and the needle went wherever it wanted. Disconnected it.

Purchased a used low mileage speedo, replace the original, and all was well for a short time.

Now I find myself going down the same path. The new speedo it starting to make noise and the needle is jumping a bit.

Has anyone else had this problem? Are 65's notorious for this?

Can't imagine it would be the cable? All seems well with it.

Transmission has been changed.........couldn't be on that end?

What should I do?

Your post takes me back about 30 years...first Alaska winter for a Calif '65 EC. I guess the grease in the cable was cold and stiff and the cable "wound up". When it unwound, it made a hellacious sound and pegged the needle hard which caused the pointer to snap off. Junkyard speedometer and new cable to fix.

Got the new cable assembly at GM parts counter (~30 years ago).

Did you replace only the inner cable? Probably the cable housing has a kink causing binding. That happend to me also on my '65. Be careful not to kink the cable when installing. Lube lightly with some lube that doesn't congeal when cold.

I'd be surprised if your speedo head was the culprit.
