: Chevellekid has invaded another forum!!
ChevelleKid May 29th, 06, 7:48 PM Another Chevelle LUNATIC is here!!!!!
I'm 14 and I have a 1972 Chevelle Heavy Chevy. I'm a member of Long Island Chevelles ( www.longislandchevelles.com ) and am in the process of turning my Chevelle into a daily driver.
I really want to learn more about the 1971-1972 Heavy Chevys and would like to start regestry on them (or has someone beaten me to it?) I like the Heavy Chevys more than SS Chevelles because they are the forgotten Chevelles, heck most of em were turned into SS clones!
I plan on restoring my Chevelle to mostly factory specs (gotta be modded a lil bit!) I want to do factory paint, stripe pkg, interior (allready traded the buckets I had in it for a bench!), and factory options.
Here are some pics of the car itself:

(I got the bench from a member of this page...if you see this e-mail me!! You wanted to know why we were trading buckets for a bench! LOL)

First off, good luck to you, ChevelleKid. It seems you've got a rare car and it's great you want to bring it back as a H/C. I'm new here to this forum and I am also looking for ANY information anyone can provide on these cars.
My mother owns an original 1972 Heavy Chevy which she purchsed directly from the dealer new in 1972. The car is almost finished from a complete frame-off restoration to be 'refurbished' back to original condition. The car has never been modified from original specs, and although it was restored, has a numbers-matching all-original drivetrain, original unrestored interior, and most of its original body panels. It had never been raced or in any accidents. The vehicle has about 62,000 original miles, and less than a few hundred since restoration. Here is some additional information:
mechanical info:
350 4-bbl, i think it is the 185hp version
4-speed manual trans, on the floor (Saginaw or Muncie?)
posi-traction rear end (do not know specs)
no a/c or power steering
cosmetic info:
cranberry red with black stripes
'bulge' hood with chrome hood pins
'blackout' HC grille and headlight bezels with chrome borders only
no body chrome except window surrounds
single malibu-style chrome driver's mirror (does not have body color dual mirror option)
interior info:
bench front seats with cloth/vinyl dual combo throughout
standard dash with rectangular speedo, no clock, tach, am radio only
malibu-style wood door panel trim
rubber floor
The serial # for the vehicle lists a '1C' code (not built from a malibu platform). The build sheet properly indicates the RPO 'YF3' package for H/C, with 'F40' suspension package, and 'M20' transmission. She still has the original owner's manual, purchase receipt, vehicle build sheet, and original ignition and door keys that came with the vehicle.
I have been able to find little information on these vehicles. It appears that original non-cloned H/C's are extremely hard to find these days, although almost 10,000 were built in 1972. I'd love to be able to approximate a value on this vehicle, and/or find out how many other similar vehicles are actually still in existence. I live in southern california and have been to several muscle car shows, I follow classic car auctions, and I have never seen another one in person. I have only seen a few images from this and some other enthusiast forums, and they have been few and far between.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. :)
furball8994 Jun 10th, 06, 9:10 PM try this for value's 72chevelle value's (http://www.collectorcarmarket.com/menus/ccmprcs/72chchle.htm)
socal_enthusiast Jun 10th, 06, 9:32 PM awesome.. i guess rare doesn't always mean vauable. I still love the car, though...:)
THEL78ISGREAT Jun 10th, 06, 11:37 PM Which engine did yours come with? 307, 350, or 402?
1972Custom Jun 11th, 06, 6:36 PM in 1972 you could get a 350 ss but not a heavy chevy. heavy chevy's came with 402, and 454. disc brakes came on the front drums rear. almost all heavy chevy's came with no options. most had 4 speed muncies on the floor with notched bench seats. heavy chevy's were an ss with no ss dash cluster, and it was stipped down. almost positive mine is a heavy chevy, but with no paper work or build sheet it is vertually impossable to prove it. heavy chevy's will not come back as a heavy chevy, but almost always as an ss. this is why a properly documented heavy chevy is worth so much. i love my 1972 chevelle what ever it is. hope this helps alittle.
1972Custom Jun 11th, 06, 6:57 PM i don't remember the web site, but i found one that i got to enter my v.i.n., and it came back as a heavy chevy. also check the door sticker if it's there it might tell you. also they did not come with racing stipes. so check the paint code(under hood ,under driverside wndsheild) if there is only one paint code there are no stripes. first is body second is stipes (white, or black second number), and not all ss came with stripes. good luck with finding out imfo on hevy chevy's, and i will be watching to see what you guys can find.
p.s. i do not know of a true heavy chevy regestry. sorry did not mean to invaid on your post about heavy chevy's. good luck with your ride. i also have some parts, and can know were to find more.
socal_enthusiast Jun 12th, 06, 1:40 AM in 1972 you could get a 350 ss but not a heavy chevy. heavy chevy's came with 402, and 454.
I do not think this is correct. All the research I've done so far indicates you could order a H/C with any motor except the 454 big block. the 350 could be ordered in H/C trim level, I've found several that came with this motor, either in 2-bbl or 4-bbl.
almost positive mine is a heavy chevy, but with no paper work or build sheet it is vertually impossable to prove it. heavy chevy's will not come back as a heavy chevy, but almost always as an ss.
not sure about the results of a vin search yielding ss or H/C. there are some posts on this site indicating the only way to prove a vehicle is a true H/C is to possess the build sheet with vin listed, which i did not know until i read this.
this is why a properly documented heavy chevy is worth so much.
well...according to the link posted above for H/C value, "worth so much" appears to be about $16,000...!! not quite what you'll get for an SS. :) I guess it all depends on what someone would actually pay for one...since original, mint cars with documentation so rarely come up for sale.
sorry, not sure which one of us you're addressing in the reply, I'm assuming you're also looking for info and calrifications...
1972Custom Jun 12th, 06, 2:45 AM I Guess Both Of You, And Who Everelse. I Have Looked In To H/c, And Have Not Found Very Good Info. I Look For H/c Cars All The Time. I Know That Ss Are Alot Of $$, But The More Rare Cars Are, The More There Worth. Thank You For The Information, And I Will Keep Waiting To See What You, And Chevellekid Come Up With.
socal_enthusiast Jun 12th, 06, 7:44 PM Sorry, 1972Custom...I wish I knew more. All I have been able to gather from searching internet forums (this and others), searching for these vehicles online, and searching auction records, is that in 1972 about 9,500 were produced, you must have the original build sheet that indicates H/C was ordered as an option, you could not get them with a 454, and I've seen them for sale from anywhere between $3000 - $30,000, which probably depends mainly on specs, authenticity, and condition.
I have the following conclusion: these cars are RARE, and it seems like there are few people that know anything more than general details about them.
THEL78ISGREAT Jun 12th, 06, 10:34 PM I know they were available with every V8 except the 454. Not too much more that isnt obvious.
