I thought I knew the answer to this question, caused I've owned one of my 1968's since new in Nov of 1967. I've replaced my hood insulation on all of my cars several times each. Never was a doubt in my mind. Till one night one of the guys from SCCCC asked me about his 69 and my 68. Which side of the hood insulation is supposed to face outward? The flat matted side or the looser/stringier (for lack of a good term to use) side? Anyone know for sure what is correct?

The assembly manual shows the insulation installation on page 11-13, A-7. It says on the 13500-600-837-867-880 series to separate the insulation into 4 pieces before installing. It also shows a hood panel insulator adhesive to be used on installation. Since it would be difficult to put the adhesive on the "fuzzy" part of the insulation and get it to stick, I believe that the glue goes on the flat side and the fuzzy side faces out.
The manual also shows a different insulator for the 13735-13785 series that covers most of the bottom of the hood and is held on with clips.
That's my story, & I'm sticking to it!!! :D

You got it.
Glue may not be necessary if the panels fit snug in the four cavities.
The "fuzzy" side out makes sense for maximum sound absorption from the engine. I don't use glue on mine since the flanges on the sheet metal bracing hold them in place very well.

The guys got it right..... fuzzy hairy side down, facing the engine. I installed the 4 piece set in my '68 last month, They fit pretty good but I still used a dab of contact cement at four points just to make sure they wouldn't get sucked in.
