: Spark plug wires for big blocks

I'm in need for some spark plug wires for my 402.

My 402 is now equipped with an HEI, and not a points distributor. Therefore I'm going to go ahead and guess I need to tell the clowns at Advance/Autozone/Pep Boys to sell me a set of wires for a '75 truck with a 454. :)

My question is this....did the big blocks come with straight boots or 135 degree boots?

Also would it be best to get one of those "you cut it to your length" type plug wire kits? Aside from "fitting properly" wouldn't the shorter wires have a lower resistance than the longer wires? Is that an issue to be concerned with?

One other question....on one of the "you cut it to your length" deals....is there any special wire crimpers needed to secure the connectors to the wires? Or will a standard set of wire crimpers from Wally World be sufficient?

Thanx in advance.....and not Advance Auto. :D

Your best bet is to get the "custom" aka. you cut um wire kit. You can use a regular wire crimper. But something like this from jegs is better $13.98http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/55580575.jpg The mallory set I used came with a set of crimping die's that work in a crimper like this http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/1213505.gif but its a little pricey. $61.99

I like using 135 degree boots. My favorite 135 boot wire is the Taylor Spiral core. They come in a bunch of colors to match what you need.

Here is a pic of some installed on one of my engines:

Cheap set of Accel wires, cut to fit. No crimper with kit. These are straight boots with a 135* boot added at the #8 plug. I suggest all 135 degree for big block, with headers.
Next set of wires going on are from MSD cut to fit and come with small crimper.
Not sure what type of wires you will get from pep boys, but I would go with a performace wire set from Taylor, MSD , Moroso, Accel etc. Don't think Peppy sells those.
Longer wire compared to shorter wire and resistence not to be concerned with.
Boots for Distributer on these sets usually come with, but not always, both HEI and Point boots

I run taylor as well love em. Resistance was extremely low compared to the set I pulled off (probably because they were cheap and worn out).

These are simply the BEST wires out there, bar none! I've bought these Delphi/Packard sets on eBay and they're a steal for what you're getting IMO.

Yes, in their day, Packard 440 real "wire" wires were the ticket!!

I didn't know they were still around? Used to be able to buy Packard 440 wire on a spool and cut to fit..

I bought Taylor BB custom, black, 135 boot real "wire" wires for mine!
