: pwr steering bracket blues!!
67bu-rat May 26th, 06, 6:38 PM I have a 67 chevelle w/ 350 in it (I know, I know but it came w/car)I have a short water pump & the orig. 283 bracket hits harm balencer & aftermarkets the pump hits steering gearbox someone out there must have run into this problem.anybody find a bracket that will work, w/out changing water pump, or balencer?
Philip May 26th, 06, 7:42 PM I have heard of modifying the lower bracket to gain clearance for the balancer. If I recall correctly not very much needs removed and it doesn't compromise the strength. You do not want to put the small balancer on your 350. A better alternative is to remove the spacer in front of the radiator and use a long water pump, pulleys and brackets.
67bu-rat May 26th, 06, 9:06 PM thanks 64 elky I will try altering bracket first
dirtrocker May 27th, 06, 8:11 AM You sure you have the right brackets? My 65 has a 400 in it with a 8.25" balancer, stock brackets from 283, with no clearance issues. Everything is close, but it fits.
Can U post a pic?

I just tried to bolt my power steering cradle to the 400 and it will not fit. The bolt holes are 1/4" from lining up with the bracket against the balancer. With an 8" balancer I could see it bolting but rubbing. Is yours different from mine?

dirtrocker May 27th, 06, 5:15 PM I'm not exactly sure which bracket I have. It was a NOS piece I bought off ebay listed as stock 283 bracket (was missing when I bought car)? Mine is made diffrent than yours though.

killbilly May 28th, 06, 8:30 AM i have a 65 elky with the same pwr steering bracket, i just swapped in a sb400 and had the same issues with the harmonic balancer being bigger in dia. and the bracket was hitting it. what i did was cut the nose off the bracket until i had enough clearance between it and the harmonic balancer,(which got dang close to the bolt holes), and i welded a little gusset behind the bolt holes to add back in a little strength. it works great.
67bu-rat May 28th, 06, 6:45 PM SAME BRACKET AS YOURS & MISSING BY 1/4 INCH ALSO I WILL TRY CUTTING IT DOWN & USING IT INEXPENSIVE ROUTE 1st THIS CAR IS A MONEY PIT!!
