I have heard of modifying the lower bracket to gain clearance for the balancer. If I recall correctly not very much needs removed and it doesn't compromise the strength. You do not want to put the small balancer on your 350. A better alternative is to remove the spacer in front of the radiator and use a long water pump, pulleys and brackets.

You sure you have the right brackets? My 65 has a 400 in it with a 8.25" balancer, stock brackets from 283, with no clearance issues. Everything is close, but it fits.

Can U post a pic?

I just tried to bolt my power steering cradle to the 400 and it will not fit. The bolt holes are 1/4" from lining up with the bracket against the balancer. With an 8" balancer I could see it bolting but rubbing. Is yours different from mine?

I'm not exactly sure which bracket I have. It was a NOS piece I bought off ebay listed as stock 283 bracket (was missing when I bought car)? Mine is made diffrent than yours though.

i have a 65 elky with the same pwr steering bracket, i just swapped in a sb400 and had the same issues with the harmonic balancer being bigger in dia. and the bracket was hitting it. what i did was cut the nose off the bracket until i had enough clearance between it and the harmonic balancer,(which got dang close to the bolt holes), and i welded a little gusset behind the bolt holes to add back in a little strength. it works great.
