I have a chrome air cleaner that I want to strip so that I can paint it a black crinkle finish to match my valve covers. Is there an easy "at home" method to do this or do I have to take it to a professional stripper?

Since you're just painting over it. I'd just sand the chrome with 400 grit s/paper so the paint will stick then primer it and paint it.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot.

I know that easy off oven cleaner takes the cheap chrome plating off of 1:24 scale model parts. Haven't tried it on REAL chrome though.

Sandblasting works the best. Just to rough it up, so the paint will stick.

So its not really necesary to take all the chrome off? You just need to rough it up so the paint will stick?

priming it will make ALL the difference as to how new paint adheres to the old surface. no primer = no adhesion.
