Hi everyone, there's no sub-forum for accessories and shifters, so this would be the closest one? good enough ;)

I will be needing a nice floor shifter to work with my 2004R, I don't want to deal with column shifting anymore. In my el camino I have a hurst pro-matic shifter, which I like and works pretty well (the extra long handle is good, no stretching needed to grab it) but my main complaint is that it has no neutral lockout/safety mechanism. You can shift from 4th/OD to neutral with the same motion as shifting from 1-2, 2-3 or 3-4. More than a few times I've found myself over-reving when I thought I was in the 3rd gear position.

So what shifters do you guys use / know of that have some mechanism that requires an extra motion or switch to get out of the forward drive gears? I'm open to different brands, I would like the shifter to have some sort of boot, and long handle, and preferably be the rachet action type. Thanks.

The Hurst Quarter stick is a nice unit with a good reverse lock out. Here is the link to the catalog for auto shifters.

thanks for the link wally. that quarter stick looks like a solid shifter, but it looks a little too compact. I don't think that handle will go up far enough for me to comfortably shift without having to stretch out and reach, although it does have the neutral safety feature that I need. Anyone else know some good shifters with neutral lockout?

My favorite aftermarket shifter is the B&M Quick Silver! That is what I have in my Chevelle, I love it!

^ bumps back up to the top sorry

Motorhead: Does the quicksilver have the neutral safety lockout mechanism?

thats gonna be one of the most important factors in my decision

Yes the quicksilver will only ratchet one gear at a time up or down unless you lift on the handle, then you can downshift to park without stopping at every detent.

I liked the B&M Star Shifter real well. Has reverse lockout but I don't have a clue if they make one (or a different detent plate) for an OD tranny. I'd bet they sell something to make it work with an OD.

Thanks, I'll check out the star shifter as well. Too bad b&m's catalog doesn't tell you some of the important features of their shifters like neutral safety. Seems they're more interested in showing you huge pictures instead....
