bbjhill May 24th, 06, 1:20 AM I finally got my custom dash cluster assembled. I hope to install it in my car within the next week or two. What do you all think.......

Malibu70 May 24th, 06, 3:05 AM The white-on-black gauges look good in the original dash cluster.
I'd be concerned with the lack of oil pressure at 6500 RPM though... =)
The two large round gauges are slightly bigger than the opening. Did you fill the gap between the gauges and the gear indicator/idiot light housing?
I replaced my '70 gauges last fall and now know this area of the dash very well.
hmott May 24th, 06, 9:55 AM I love that.. what gauges are they? I was looking to do that and had a hard time finding a speedo. What sizes are they?
bbjhill May 24th, 06, 10:13 AM Malibu70 - I did not fill in the space you are referring to. I was hoping to re-install the original clear lens, but there was too much glare with that and the lenses on the guages themselves.
Hmott - The guages are Autometer "streetrod series" Designer Black. The tach and speedo are 3 1/8" and the others are 2 1/16".
Note: These are the older designer black guages as the new ones have a red needle. Autometer will still make them with the white needle on a custim order basis.
Brob May 24th, 06, 1:51 PM I did a similar Autometer dash for my 1964. I made a grounding harness because some of the meters have plastic housings. After I spent the time making the harness I saw an advertisement in Super Chevy for a grounding harness $55.00. It would have been worth it to me.
bochnak May 24th, 06, 2:27 PM Very nice. I'm assuming this was a sweep dash? I plan to do this as well eventually. Can you breifly explain how you did it?
Thanks,
Matt
Big Al's 70 May 24th, 06, 6:22 PM Absolutely Awesome !!!!!! I've been trying to envision something like that for my old POS sweeper dash
71chevelle406 May 26th, 06, 10:24 AM Man that is really cool plus you did a great job. I just removed the dash on my rig to do that. What did you use to seat the gauges against? I was thinking of using some type of aluminum but I really like the way yours came out.
dittoz May 26th, 06, 10:42 AM WOW!
Now why can't I do something like that...!
Out of curiosity, what sort of cost did you wind up with (ball park), between the harness and the gauges? I presume you fabbed up the plate that the gauges are on and fit it into the "sweeper" area?
Brob May 27th, 06, 7:10 PM This is This is a better view of my Autometer dash. The three gauges on the left fit the fit into the original openings. I had to drill holes for the other three gauges.

bbjhill May 29th, 06, 10:51 AM I used A piece of aluminum about 1/8" thick, It is actually part of a street sign! After fabbing it, I painted it satin black.
The only cost was the gauges at about $300.00, oh and tons of labor! I used a dremel to rough cut the holes in the plastic cluster frame and then filed them for a nice fit.
Thanks for the comments, and Brob, your dash looks sweet!
454RAT Jun 4th, 06, 10:25 AM Can you tell me the exact major outside diameter of those gauges, Mainly the speedo and tach. I'm also making a custom dash insert and area is tight. Also what size hole did you cut for the gauges. I'm guessing that they are the 3 3/8 speedo and 2 1/16 oil, etc..
