I finally got my custom dash cluster assembled. I hope to install it in my car within the next week or two. What do you all think.......

The white-on-black gauges look good in the original dash cluster.

I'd be concerned with the lack of oil pressure at 6500 RPM though... =)

The two large round gauges are slightly bigger than the opening. Did you fill the gap between the gauges and the gear indicator/idiot light housing?

I replaced my '70 gauges last fall and now know this area of the dash very well.

I love that.. what gauges are they? I was looking to do that and had a hard time finding a speedo. What sizes are they?

Malibu70 - I did not fill in the space you are referring to. I was hoping to re-install the original clear lens, but there was too much glare with that and the lenses on the guages themselves.

Hmott - The guages are Autometer "streetrod series" Designer Black. The tach and speedo are 3 1/8" and the others are 2 1/16".

Note: These are the older designer black guages as the new ones have a red needle. Autometer will still make them with the white needle on a custim order basis.

I did a similar Autometer dash for my 1964. I made a grounding harness because some of the meters have plastic housings. After I spent the time making the harness I saw an advertisement in Super Chevy for a grounding harness $55.00. It would have been worth it to me.

Very nice. I'm assuming this was a sweep dash? I plan to do this as well eventually. Can you breifly explain how you did it?

Thanks,
Matt

Man that is really cool plus you did a great job. I just removed the dash on my rig to do that. What did you use to seat the gauges against? I was thinking of using some type of aluminum but I really like the way yours came out.

WOW!

Now why can't I do something like that...!

Out of curiosity, what sort of cost did you wind up with (ball park), between the harness and the gauges? I presume you fabbed up the plate that the gauges are on and fit it into the "sweeper" area?

This is This is a better view of my Autometer dash. The three gauges on the left fit the fit into the original openings. I had to drill holes for the other three gauges.

I used A piece of aluminum about 1/8" thick, It is actually part of a street sign! After fabbing it, I painted it satin black.

The only cost was the gauges at about $300.00, oh and tons of labor! I used a dremel to rough cut the holes in the plastic cluster frame and then filed them for a nice fit.

Thanks for the comments, and Brob, your dash looks sweet!

Can you tell me the exact major outside diameter of those gauges, Mainly the speedo and tach. I'm also making a custom dash insert and area is tight. Also what size hole did you cut for the gauges. I'm guessing that they are the 3 3/8 speedo and 2 1/16 oil, etc..
