I know this subject has been beat to death... but I am still confussed. I recently broke 2 TH350 transmissions drag racing. They broke in exactly the same place (bell housing) at the same speed. I was told that the TH350's are a liittle weak in the front . So I decided I am going to put in a 700R4 from a 87 to 93. I know about the cross member, cooling lines, electrical connects. What I am not sure is the torque convertor. I want the convertor to lock up to take advantage of lower RPM's. That means a new convertor ? and can I use my " Quick Silver" shifter ? Thanks

I keep hearing all this talk about AUTOMATIC transmissions. What is meant by automatic? Does that mean it shifts by itself or something? Or does that mean that you don't have to come to a complete stop to put it in first gear?

You'll definately need a 700r4 converter. I don't believe the shifter will work either. good luck

DRAG RACING WITH A 700R4! WHY? Dont get me wrong, its a strong trans, but the tall first gear (3.06) will kill the powerband. Try a 200r4, they have the same gear ratio as the th350 plus the overdrive, with no lose of power because of the huge gap between first and second gear.

I run a 200-4R and it is the best thing since sliced bread. It can be built to take the horse power. First gear is 2.74 compared to the 700-R4 of 3.06. You do not have to modify the drive shaft; just move the transmission mount back about 2 inches.

Hi Ferril, both the 200R4 and th 700R4 can be
built "Bullet Proof" for racing. The only
"disadvantage" if you want to call it that is
the 700 has a higher numerically 1st gear ratio that gives you slightly less gas mileage!? Here are some figures:
GM Ratios
200R4 1st:2.74/2nd:1.57/3rd:1.00/4th:0.67
700R4 1st:3.06/2nd:1.62/3rd:1.00/4th:0.70
TH350 1st:2.52/2nd:1.52/3rd:1.00/-
(from my 86SS with 3.73 gears and 2004R)
FINAL DRIVE RATIOS
200R4 1st=10.22/2nd=5.85/3rd=3.73/4th=2.49
compare the 700R4;
700R4 1st=11.41/2nd=6.82/3rd=3.73/4th=2.68
from my 81 Z28 with a 3.42 gears;
TH350 1st=8.61/2nd=5.19/3rd=3.42
