According to the guy who will be helping me with my car, do the jambs first. You don't have to sand them, but you do need to clean them up and get all the old door hinge lube and dirt out of there. Then he recommends using a product called Clear Bond which you spray right over the old paint. It softens up and etches the old paint so the new paint will bond to it. Then you can then use a good enamel like Dupont Centauri to paint the door jambs and the bottoms of the hood and trunk. This guy has done some excellent custom work here in this area. I've had a chance to see his work, and he seems to know what he's talking about.

I paint the door jams the same time as the whole body, with the doors and nose off, after the whole body has been primed and blocked. I just dont like the tape lines you get by shooting the jams first, then taping them off to shoot the rest of the car. You have to be careful when hanging a painted door, but the finished look is cleaner IMO.

I think that ALL the work should be done ont he body, just ready to be final sanded, then jamb it.

ok, i have the doors and nose off, jambs are stripped & primed, body is ready to be blocked. after blocking is done, is it better to paint the jambs then put the car together,or have the fenders, doors, hood etc. off, paint them all and then put it back together carefully? thanx, jim

Word of advice, if u paint the car with everything off MAKE SURE YOU HANG EVERYTHING THE WAY IT GOES ON THE CAR! As in hang the doors vertically, the hood should lay flat etc. I learned the hard way with my 70 C10. Sprayed it metallic blue with the doors laying flat. The metal flake sank deeper into the paint. Looked fine till i put everything together, now the doors appear darker than the rest of the truck. I do like the way the jams come out when everything is painted in seperate pieces though.

You can jamb it with the doors on by opening the doors up as you paint around the car. I did this on the last 70 I painted. It turned out flawless. Jambing the doors first leaves tape lines.
Hanging everything after it's painted leaves scratches.
You can even jamb it after the outside is painted. I've done this with a modified air brush. You'd never know the difference.
But I think it's stillbetter to jamb it while painting with the doors on.

We paint the car with only the doors on and opened. Everything else is painted seperately. Its way too tuff to put fresh painted doors back on a car.

when sanding the jambs, since they aren't seen as much or inspected as closely as the rest of the body, i use a scuff pad instead of trying to block them. my neighbor gave them to me and they are similar to a brillo pad but are equivilant to 300 grit sand paper. you should be able to find them at a local paint shop.
