Gentlemen: It looks like I am facing rebuild or replace on the front right calliper on my Corvette. Just wondering if my stock Corvette would have been equipped with cast iron pistons or stainless. ( FWIW All replacements seem to be stainless. If the left front is cast iron, I will go ahead and replace it too for good measure. ) Any assitance appreciated. Thanks.....R.B.

R.B., your car has cast iron calipers with 4 aluminum pistons.
On this design the caliper wall wears, not the piston.
There are a lot of places to get the calipers sleeved with stainless, but they still use the stock type pistons. Do both of the fronts, at least.
Jeff
Thanks for the info. I did take much of it to pieces, but have not yet been able to separate the two caliper halves. I could see that the pistons were not cast, but was not able to identify them as aluminum. Thanks for the information. I am going to find out what I can about a rebuild place in Pt. Huron, MI called Murray's Discount Auto Store. They advertise stainless sleeve remans. I am also looking into the availability of a rebuild kit. I have already learned a lot, so I do plan to do both fronts. Many thanks. ( I may have another question in another week or so.....didn't want to do this, but now that I'm into it, I rather enjoy the learning and the doing. ) R.B.

RB,
Definitely buy the calipers assembled. You don't want to try to assemble a kit.The good rebuilders test them for leaks before they send them out.
I have used lonestarcaliper.com, vbandp.com., and ssbrakes.com in the past with no problems.
Just buy some good pads, have someone turn the rotors correctly, and you'll be done with the fronts!
Good Luck!
Jeff
Thanks, I'll keep you posted. Good news, I hope. R.B.
