I need to replace the key tumbler portion of the ignition switch of my '66 SS and I was wondering how do you remove this from the ignition body? It looks as though you have to turn the key to accessory and then insert a small wire or the like into the little hole next to the key slot. I haven't had any luck with this yet. Is this correct or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Scott.

Never had any luck with the wire or paperclip in my 68.I went to a thin drillbit.(Use on the flat side that get tighten in the drill).Used that to push in with, then turn key to as though starting car. Then on the 68 is what to be able to unscrew the bezel. Then lets you remove ignition.Rember to disconnect the ground wire from your battery before doing this.

This is how I removed mine on a 64 but don't know if a 66 is similar to a 64.
I used a heavy duty paper clip and had to work at it alittle.
Ignition Switch removal:
With the key in, turn to ACC. Then with a small wire/pin push through the small hole in the key cylinder face. This pushes down a spring-loaded pin that prevents the key from turning farther. With the pin down, turn the cylinder a little farther PAST ACC and the key cylinder can now be pulled out.

Thanks much for the info. Turning the key further past the accessory position releases the lock in a 66. Thanks again,
Scott.

I just tried this with my 68 and it worked no problem, insert key and turn it toward the accessory direction and then put small drill bit or mini screwdriver into the tiny hole on the cyclinder key face and turn key past accessory some more and the key mechanism pulls right out. Then I was able to unscrew the tamper proof collar (righty loosey, lefty tighty) off the key cyclinder and replace the key cyclinder with a new ignition key cyclinder.
This has helped me a great deal with my 1968
Thank You!!!
