: 67 Hood Modification Required

Just finished installing my new Bill Mitchell small block. Somewhere along the way they changed to using Super Victor manifolds which are really tall. So now, the engine is about 1" too tall for the stock hood to close. Does anyone have any suggestions on a subtle way to modify the stock hood to resolve the height problem? I was thinking of a cowl induction type thing. And I dont' do body work, so I'm gonna have to find a really good shop to handle this one. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

it would be cheaper to swap out the manifold... if that is at all possible.. can you make up the space with a smaller air filter and base and cap? I know they make low profile ones.. Modifying your hood can't normally be undone. However if that is the way you want to go, why not buy a cowl induction hood and keep your original? either way you will be spending about the same amount..

thanks for the insight - you are right. I should keep the original hood. I just don't know where to get a hood that will fit a 67 chevelle that has cowl induction. Since the engine was build by Bill Mitchell, if I change the manifold they void the warranty. When I laid this project out in early March, BM was still using a low-profile manifold. They claim they had to go to the victor to get over the 500HP they were advertising, but now the engine doesn't fit.....as I've said other places on this board - I shoulda just built it myself.

try harwood for fiberglass, or look around (esp in the back of car mags) for a stamped steel hood.. Hell even check out swap meets for a not so purdy hood that you can cut up! at least you'll have your original! that way once the warranty is up you can pull the manifold and slap a low rise on and put the original back on http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I think some supplyers might even sell a cowl type hood (ie ground up/year one etc) Good luck... sounds like a beauty http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Glastec will probably build you a custom cowl hood at a reasonable cost. I had a similar issue with my 69 and I didn't want a 4 inch cowl hood. I called Glastec and they agreed to build a 1.75 inch cowl hood by grafting a 67 Camaro cowl onto a stock flat fiberglass 69 hood. this custom hood is a very nice looking piece and makes my 69 look great. The cost of the custom hood was only $100.00 more than their regular glass hood.

Mike, If you don't want your stock hood I'm in the market for one. I'm in Houston and I can drive over to pick it up.

Ditto on the Glasstek hood. I think they are the only worthwhile company making glass hoods for early Chevelles - A1 are junk from what I hear. I have a 4" Glasstek on my 67 (see sig) but they'll built you anything you want. No website but their phone is 630-978-9897 and they're just outside Chicago.

The fit is really good and took minimal prep to paint it. I did have to cut some underside bracing (see here (http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/underhood02.jpg)) to clear my fuel injection but it's not noticable from the outside.
