My chevelle is a 402 350 hp engine with a comp cam 268xe in it. besides that the car is pretty stock. I am looking to generate more power and move up from the stock exhaust maifolds and the beat up exhaust system. I am looking for good looks and performance,(nice deep rumble) as well.

I was told flowmaster american thunder would be a good system. No suggestions on headers yet
any suggestions please!!! Thanks

I like the fit of my Heddman Elite Headers.
They are great if you have a stock style oil pan. Lots of clearance, easy install, ball and socket style collector flange, ceramic coating.

I run heddman elites also - great fit and they are coated INSIDE and out. Not all of them are.

I also have a Pypes complete 2.5" system with X-pipe and 18" street pro mufflers. Sounds great. I upgraded to the ceramic coated system, so it looks fantastic but is pricey. I did it because they gave me a sweet deal for using my car in their advertising and at one of the Super Chevy Shows.

Soundclip of my car is on the Pypes website, I'm the 70SS.

Here's a link to my post on the system and installation: http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90800&highlight=Pypes

I have an American Thunder 2.5" system on my 69 SB. Sound is good but there are a lot of them around. Kinda loud at cruise but not terrible. My headers are Flow Tech ceramic, and they have been perfect for 2100 miles.
If I was doing it over again, I would get the proven exhaust system and try some different mufflers. Good luck

i think any 2.5" system would be fine. check out the super 40's i have them and like them there not as loud as the normal 40 series but a deeper sound.

Brian,

If you do decide to go with headers get a good quality set of ceramic coated ones. The ceramic coating looks great and reduces underhood temperatures like you wouldn't believe. I went with Blackjacks, but to do it over again I would spring for a higher quality one because I am starting to get little rust speckles on them.

Don't forget, that whatever you do with the carb and exhaust your leaving a lot on the table with those highway gears and stock torque converter, so there's another opportunity to increase performance.

Headman ceramics are great. 40 Series Flowmasters are great too but are a little loud inside the car. Also, and these are great, DMH electric dumps. And if you want a deep sound go atleast 3.0" all the way back.

just dont get the dynomax ceramics, i got em, big mistake, dynomax only has jet -hot coat the outside, and not the inside, so that pretty finish will last about a year

I like my hedman's, good fit, easy install. I have the AT 2.5" exaust - likewise good fit, etc. I like the Pypes setup with the X pipe, and would use that if I had it to do over. They use FM mufflers, I believe.

Hooker Competition Ceramic coated headers (2 inch Primary and 3.5 inch collector) and the American Thunder 3 inch flowmaster kit with H-pipe. The mufflers that came with the kit are 30 series. Perfect sound, almost a sleeper sound until you open it up. But, I am running almost 600 hp. So if you want torque, keep the primaries small and go with full length headers and 2.5 inch exhaust. My next choice will be Magnaflow 3 inch kit. Much better sound and quality.
