Anyone with any experence applying this paint. At wits end after 3 attempts with there"Nantucket blue" on my 67SS.Have tryed with both hvlp and conventional paint systems. The paint lays out nice, excellent gloss and depth but the flake looks wierd and uneven on the larger flater panels.Should I go to a different urethane? Any help/suggestions appricated. Pat

Spraying a single stage metallic is not fun with any paint.Make sure you have enough air pressure, even spray pattern, and you need to make dead even passes to have the proper metallic layout.Nason is a great paint IMO.I would bet money its the same as the higher end or discontinued Dupont products in a different can.I would use a base/clear system for any metallic paint.

I ditto the above advice. Should be using BC/CC system for metallic.
What size tip does your gun have?

Pat K, 70isfine nailed it to the T. Single stage metalics are a bitch without alot a experience. You probably have what is called "Tiger Striping" which is when some of the metalic particals in the paint are on their side on some are laying flat which makes them reflect light differently. With base/clear you don't get this. Best of Luck

You are trying to do one of the hardest things in painting. The problem is you can forget about the super gloss that you are seeing now. You have to back off on the last coat and spray a very "airy" mist coat to distribute the metallic. In fact, you may have to back off on all coats so you don't get the stripes to begin with. If the first coats are still very wet, even a super dry mist coat will not help because the first coats are so wet the last one just sinks into them.

I hate to say but the paint store guy that didn't talk you out of this (they may have tried I don't know) should be whipped with a wet noodle.

With the HVLP I used the Binks mach 1 gun with the #90(.030)fluid nozzle and with the conventional I used the Binks #7 gun with a #36 needle. The results come out pretty much the same with both guns.

Tiger striping is a term I was not familiar with but I think its an accurate discription my problem. When I started the project almost 3yrs ago my paint suppler said that it was the only urethane available in that color code so I went with it. Just off the phone with him and says he can now make a PPG Urethane BC/C C in that code#. Don't want to keep painting this thing over and over again. Thinking I should chalk up my losses and start over with the PPG product. Thanks Pat

You'll be very happy with the base coat clear coat system. All is not lost with the single stage paint. It gives you a great surface to block sand and maybe see some imperfections you may have otherwise missed. Block sand the urethane with 600. It'll look great when you;re done. Let us know how your doing.
