Installing a 572 Gen VI in a 1967 El Camino, does anyone know which headers will work?

Thanks

Hi Tony,
I installed a set of Hooker super comps on my 572 in my 70 Chevelle.I had no choice but to clearance the number 3 and 5 header tubes to clear the steering shaft.My car is pretty nice and the only thing that really bothers me under the hood are the two dented tubes.
In hindsight I wish I had modified the steering shaft rather than bashing the s@#$ out of my brand new headers.According to Hooker the clearance issue is due to the tall deck height of the 572.
Good luck and keep us posted on your project.

Vinny;

Thank you for your reply.
That's what I was affraid of, steering shaft clearance.
I am not familiar with modifing the shaft. How or what is done to make the modification?

Thanks again;

Tony

Hi Tony,
There are companies out there that make steering shafts with universal joints
which would allow you to angle the shaft up and away from the tubes.Mine seems very tight and if I am not mistaken it will be tighter in your car.I just dont see how a shaft would actually work.

Vinny;

Yup did a lot of checking around on the headers and the steering problem. I bit the bullet and ordered a set of 2-1/4" headers from Lemons. They are spendy, and go over the frame rails but they will fit. I am going to install a set of aftermarket inner fender wells so I won't be cutting the originals.
I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again for the help, much appreciated and have a nice weekend;

Hi Tony,
Smart move,if I had been aware of the clearance issue I would have opted for a custom set myself.I spent too much money to have have something like that under the hood when everything else is perfect.If you dont mind my asking,how much for the Lemons Headers?

The total with shipping $1394.00 but does not include ceramic coating. I can get the ceramic coating done for $200.00 which I am going to do.

1500 for coated headers? Ouch.

I agree and believe me, I have been all over the map looking for headers that will fit. The only alternative is to use headers with 1-7/8 tubes, in which case are too restrictive and not recommended for the application. The engine is dynoed using 2-1/4" X36" long primary tubes with 3-1/2" collectors.
The other alternative is to have a set custom built to fit inside the frame rail, but, these would not be a tuned set, and would cost more than $1500.00 because of the time required to fit each tube.

Vinney;

I forgot to ask, what did you use for an oil pan when you switched to the 572?

Hi Tony,
I used the truck pan that came with the motor because it was a 6qt pan as opposed to the 4qt pan that GMPP has available.In order to use the truck pan I had to modify the crossmember.I installed my 572 in April 04 and at that time I could not find an aftermarket pan which could handle the 4.5" stroke.

Ok, thank you. I was going to do the same thing, but got a Milodon 7-quart capacity.

Thanks again;

Vinny;

Looks like the Milodon is not the answer either. Pan bolt holes won't align with the ones on the block. Some are off almost a complete hole.
How much did you have to cut/modify on the cross member?
