: Hard Start

I just inherited my son's Chevelle (350 CID/Muncie 4 speed) while he goes off to college (can't afford the gas). The problem I'm having is getting the car to start once I shut off the engine. The problem only occurs when the engine is at normal operating temp (190-200). I have the timing set at 8% BTDC and it has an HEI ignition system (Accel). I've check all the grounds. I'm not sure how old the battery or starter are. It is equipped with stock exaust manifolds and has a aluminum intake.

Any recommendations?

Yeah, put a set of the biggest battery cables you can find on there. Also make sure the battery connections are clean and tight.

OK. I'll look but I believe the cable are the correct size. The ground cable is hooked up to the alt bracket. Is this a suitable spot for the ground off the battery?

That is where it is supposed to be grounded.

You might want to put a heat shield on the starter.

This sounds like heat soak on your starter selenoid. I had fits getting mine to start after I drove it (w/ headers). After it cooled down, the started would spin the mototr fine. I definitley considered putting a remote selenoid on it, they sell these in Summit and the bolt to your firewall, but opted to make my own heat shield.

Don't waste your money on a heat shield if the problem is really bad. I think it's a ground issue combined with the heat soak. Keep in mind that the heat affects the starter motor as well as the solenoid. Mine had a problem before I replaced the engine and trans on my stock 350. The solenoid would kick in no problem but the starter would turn over very slowly and sometimes I'd have to get a jump start. That makes me think that moving the solenoid would not have done the trick. When I put everything back together I redid all the grounds and added new battery cables. I also replaced the stock starter with a boneyard high-torque from an early 90s Caddy. I don't know which of those did it - probably a combination - but it no longer has a hint of trouble, and the Caddy starter has the solenoid in the usual place. My guess is in the starter. The high-torques have more power while using less juice.

start with the most common problem & the cheapest to fix.... move the ground wire off the alt bracket with the little star washer & put it somewhere on the block ..clean the area down to bare metal !! & bolt the cable down ... most of the time I put the cable on to one of the unused bolt holes in block or head depending how long the cable your working with is

Welcome to a common problem with the Chevelles. I gave up after eating up 2 starter bendex drives and causing a noisy starter when operated. Moved on to a mini high torque gear reduction starter. No ,more hot start problems. I did throw in a heat shield blanket around the starter and solenoid. Small starter is a nice distance form the headers now..

Did you have to modify the starter to get it to fit a chevy?

Does the solenoid have the "R" terminal for points?

If that doesn't work the next step would be to replace the purple wire that goes to the solonoid. Over the years this wire takes a beating from the heat and elements. This cured a hot start problem I had at one time in an old Chevelle.

Don't forget to make sure you have 12v to the HEI and you can remove the resistor by-pass (yellow) wire as its not needed with the hei.

It comes either way. You tell them you have points and they will send the correct solenoid.

Sounds good. I'll pick one up shortly. I relocated and cleaned the negative cable and now it starts fine. Thanks again.
