I purchased this rear with it claimed as an "original Chevelle SS396 rearend with original
3 series carrier" from a "68 Chevelle SS396".

Numbers are:

3969278NF 1234 87890 CON 1

GM54 CCW 10068

From what I can gather from ChevelleStuff,
this is a 70-72 Chevelle rear with 3.31 ratio,
non-posi, mfr'd 100th day in 1968.
'396'9278NF for an SS396.

Am I on the right track?

How do you get a '70-'72 rear built in '68?

Do the other numbers shed light on anything else?

Please confirm or correct my info,

Thanks for your help.

Yes the casting number is 70-72 but this rear can only be a 70.
CCW is 3.31 non posi. but "CCW" code only used in 70.
1006 is Oct 6th assembly date not the 100th day of year.
Unit dates are 71+.
What you have as 8 has to be a B for Buffalo axle plant.
The year digit is not shown in the axle "stamp". The year is however shown in the small "raised" casting date on the cast iron center section.
It will be letter for month and numbers for day and last digit of year.
(I 28 9 is Sept 28th '69 for example)
Look facing the cover at the 5 or 7 O'clock position next to the opening to see the cast date.

As shooter said the date is October 6, not the 100th day of 1968 for a 70-72 rear end. The casting number is simply for a 12-bolt and does not designate a 'SS' rear end. A 12-bolt for a SS396 or SS454 optioned car was no different than a 12-bolt for a family station wagon. Way too much emphasis is placed on parts being for a SS optioned Chevelle when in fact they are not SS specific. So, the seller claiming 'original from a 68SS' is either passing on bad information or starting it.
