Hey, my vent window came out of the frame. It seems that the old owner had it pinched in there with a few strips of electrical tape. Is there supposed to be a rubber strip in there? What kind of glue do you glue it in with?
Thanks!!

Nobody knows how to install a vent window? C'mon, I'll bet you do! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Chris,
Any glass shop would probably tell you to use the black caulking stuff they use. I don't know the name of it. Mine haven't fallen out yet, sorry...

Bulb. I removed the glass from my vent windows a short while ago. They were mounted with some kind of butyl tape I guess. I could remove the stuff with a putty knife and some lacquer thinner. The thinner softens the stuff and with the putty knife you can scrape it out where the glass meets the frame on the SIDES.
When they were out I noticed the frame was completely clean on the inside, meaning the butyl tape had only adhered to the glass but sealed the frame side as well. To me this looked original and the windows had not leaked.
What I want to make clear is that I probably would not have been able to remove the glass if the caulking would have adhered to the frame as well, because I would not have been able to reach the caulking on the heads(?) side of the glass.
I am planning on mounting them with a piece of rubber in the deep end of the frame and then press caulking in the side openings. If I was to use caulking all over I would create a problem for myself later on.
I think I will use 3M 8509 caulking on this. This is meant to put between window rubbers and the body and will not dry completely (like I think the butyl did). The normal caulking for windshields glues like hell.
Hope this helps.

Vent glass is held in place with windshield urethane clean the channel and clean the glass (use a non ammonia glass cleaner on the glass) apply a very small bead within the chanel in the center
and press the glass into. Clean any excess with some adhesive remover and apply two strips of masking tape top and bottom to hold in place the urethane will cure in about 2hrs @ 70 deg then the only way to remove is to break out the glass
You should be able to pick up w/s urethane at a body shop supply or parts store
I would not use butyl it will not cure hard and the glass may separate from the chanel also some urethanes need to (recommended) activate (clean) the glass with an activato at the place of adhesion
so read the lables

Original glass was never held in with urethane in`68, whether it was the windshield or vent glass. The windshield was mounted with butyl tape and so was the vent glass, although the vent used a very thin strip. You can use urethane if you never plan to remove the vent again, but my advice would be to go to a bodyshop supply store and by a roll of thin (1/8 inch) butyl. Usually it is about an inch wide, but varies. warm the glass and the frame slighlty and wrap the butyl over the edge of the glass so it is centered and push it into the frame. It may take a little manipulating to get it in there. Then just slice the excess off with a razor blade.
The urethane method is alot messyer and very permanent. It`s up to you.

Thanks guys! I think I may try the butyl tape, because I took a look at the other side and it looks like tape in there. Also, I'm good at doing things so well, I usually have to do it twice. Break-the-glass permanence probably isn't recommended for a guy like me! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
Thanks again!
