Tool and die maker 12 years, radiation protection 25 years in a half a dozen nuclear power plants, since retiring 3 years ago, restoring a 1969 SS, also in the last three years, I could take a good guess that I have spent 4000 to 5000 hours on three different car forums, I don't have a degree in mechanics or bodywork, but I have educated myself with the help of a lot of people on these forums.

Side note:

I really believe that a technical school cannot give you the education that these car forums can, if you can spend the time.

How can you top several thousand instructors?

I like it way better than being an IT worker in an office environment. Being from a heavy labor background, I like being around people who actually work for a living and aren't wrapped up in office politics. I'd much rather replace components 3x as often because they're clogged with hydrocarbons. :D

Second career (the last three years) has two elements:

Also, I sell automotive artwork (and a few other things) at car shows - Super Chevy, Chevellabration etc - I attend 30 or so shows per year - have my own newly created website www.toocoolcarstuff.com

I got a lot of hostility during the NMCI migration. People were really attached to the way things were. IT people on base were losing their jobs. Nobody was happy to see it coming. One CO even told me that there was no reason to do it, it was just charity for us unemployed IT people - he said that some politician was destroying the navy's network to give us a handout!

Needless to say, we didn't feel welcome.

When people ask "what do you do".........I say I'm a rocket scientist. The reality is that I'm young and have a ton yet to learn....otherwise why would I even visit this site?

Also, in college, telling girls you are a rocket scientist is a big no-no. They just turn around and look for the nearest guy that belongs to a frat. I started telling them that I do all the sidewalk chalk art on the campus....works much better.

I used to dig pits to repair cable faults for Bell Telephone. Dug 2 years by hand, 6 months with a machine, then I went back to school. Pits were 6' x 4' x 6' on average.

Everyone should have a job like that for at least a while. It teaches you a lot, makes you appreciate the value of hard work if you don't already.
