: Body To Frame
chevelle hog May 12th, 06, 2:38 PM My 71 chevelle is a frame off restoration with new control arm bushings, springs and body mount bushings. I have not tightened the bushings down yet. The car is sitting high in the back end , they are the same size springs as I took off. Would it be ok to tighten the upper and lower control arm bushings? Any help would be appreciated
Jimmyhotrod May 12th, 06, 7:11 PM I'm not exactly sure what your question is or why the rear end is higher. I'm in the process of a frame off, right now. I've helped with one frame off resto, before the present one, and we tightened the bushings and everything else (8 body mount bolts), immediantly after setting the body on the frame. Everything turned out ok and level.
chevelle hog May 14th, 06, 8:46 AM Jim, What is probably causing my car to sit up higer is the new rear springs that were installed. This is causing my upper and lower control arm bushings to to pull. Would it be ok to tighten them while they are pulling to the side?
And would that help pull the rearend down? Thanks
Jimmyhotrod May 14th, 06, 9:56 AM Are the springs stock height and tension? If so...I'd place a jack under the differiential to compress the springs a little and then tighten everything down to see if it makes a difference. You may have to move the axle around a bit to get everything to line up. You can usually do this by hand, just make sure the frame is supported with jack stands too for stability. Sometimes the yoke will drop down a little, causing the bushings to pull. I place a little jack, or stand, under the yoke, where the driveshaft hooks, to pivot the rearend a little.
Hopefully this will help.
If not...Can you post a picture, so I can visualize the problem?

chevelle hog May 14th, 06, 11:31 AM alss, Thanks for words of encouragement, I hope mine will settle down also!
chevelle hog May 14th, 06, 11:37 AM Jim, thanks for the response and help once again. This is all new territory for me as I have new done a project of this magnitude. And I want not to damage some thing so I have to go back and replace, repair or repaint.I think you could appreciate what I'm saying. Thanks again and when the car gets out of the body shop I will attempt your suggestion. I will reply back after my attempt.
chevelle hog May 14th, 06, 11:43 AM Jim, I did forget to mention that the differential is also tilted slightly forward causing the yoke to tilt down. Do you think that your earlier suggestion may help to elevate that problem also? Thanks, Brad

Yes.
chevelle hog May 18th, 07, 11:54 AM I fixed my problem! My car had add on extentions so it raised the rear end up and forward. I removed them and everything fell into place.
