: Painting inner fenders and under hood stuff
BULKSS Mar 25th, 01, 3:32 PM I have new inner fenders I would like to paint them so they look original. What would be the best paint . I did a search but didnt find the post I had done quite a while ago . Also what is the best way to to clean up and spray the radiator and fire wall while in car Thanks MIKE
richr Mar 26th, 01, 5:52 AM Mike,
I did my inner fender wells and firewall with Eastwoods underhood black. It's very close to original if not exact.
It comes in spray cans or Quart cans for spraying. I used the spray cans, did it carefully, got excellent results.
Clean all your excess dirt with a scraper or wire brush. I used brake cleaner in spray cans and lacquer thinner. Then sand with 100 grit, try to get off as much as possible. I tried to get down to the metal. Afterwards I primed, sanded with 400 and painted.
Hope this helps.

GM has a reconditioning paint that is semi gloss for firewalls and inner fenders.

Stan Mar 27th, 01, 6:05 PM Try using Krylon 1613 in place of Eastwood's Underhood Black. It's cheaper, more readily available, and is a perfect match in my experience. I like PPG's DX-330 for cleaning and degreasing. Be sure to use a gloss black on your radiator. I would recommend you pull it out and paint it properly. Good luck!

1bad67 Mar 27th, 01, 6:22 PM I would go with eastwood, used both and eastwood is more duable, I have krylon and continually needs touch up, due to its low VOC, oil fuel, and certain cleaners attack the paint, and destroy the krylon finish.
mr409 Mar 28th, 01, 5:21 AM Can the Eastwood paint with stand gasoline being spilled on it?
I did the license plate door on 2 of my Chevelles but for some reason http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif they spit gas out when the tank starts to get full. This of course covers the part in gasoline! The Krylon doesn't seem to like gas too much. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
BTW, don't you just hate it when gas spits out? I don't know why they do it. My 3rd Chevelle doesn't but 2 do. No damage to the filler neck or anything else. I've learned to stand to the side when I fill those ones up. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Shawn Mar 28th, 01, 7:08 AM I'd like to know the same thing, I know it can withstand power steering fluid. I'm going to have to redo my air cleaner top because the engine size decal keeps coming off and if I remove it, it'll leave a mark from where it was. I already repainted it once already, looks like I'll have to do it again. Anyone have any idea on how I can keep the decal from peeling off next time? It seems like the heat from the engine does it.

DanD Mar 28th, 01, 6:59 PM Bob,
You can use Eastwood's Chassis paint in the spray can to paint the gas door. It's a semigloss epoxy type that will stay on there. It takes a few days for it to fully cure.

richr Mar 29th, 01, 5:34 AM I have used both, the epoxy and the underhood by Eastwood.
I have gotten Anti Freeze, Power steering, brake fluid and gasoline on them. If wiped off quickly it will be ok. I have found their paints to be the most durable. The Underhood is also great when resparaying an area after months, it seams to blend well over the first application.
Hope this helps.

ChicagoChevelle68 Mar 29th, 01, 1:35 PM For the wheelwells, I have used rustolium heavy rust primer and then gloss black with excellent results. And did it with a brush!
