I have a nice 71SS with 454ci engine. I do not know the total history on this car but everything but the engine seems to be mostly unmolested (car has ps/pb/factory ac. It has a 3.31 posi and TH400 trans. It has a Quadrajet carb and stock intake. It has hedders. Some owner at some time put a cam in the engine that rocks and shakes pretty good. I want to get the car back to a more smooth idle. I would like you folks' ideas as too what would be a good cam for this car-one that is going to have a pretty mild idle profile. I see Comp Cams and Crane Cams talk of 'smooth idle'. I am interested in having more of a cruiser than a hot out-of-the-hole car. Thanks for any thoughts.

I think a Voodoo or Extreme Energy in the 268 category will have good power and idle. Without knowing about your engine such as compression and heads etc. its hard to recommend one really.

For now (out of curiosity)I would get a vacuum gauge and see how vacuum the current cam has.
Check the timing too..you can smooth out the idle by using manifold vacuum for your vacuum advance.
