Hello all:

I am looking to smooth the firewall in my 66 Chevelle SS. Has anyone done this before or know how to do it? What type of filler can I use that will hold up? Is body flexing a concern, would it crack the filler (I am running a built 427)? Also, are there any aftermarket A/C - heater units that will have minimal or small additions to the firewall area?

Sorry for the long list of questions. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't help with the filler, but Vintage Air makes a complete A/C system that mounts under the dash. It is hidden, & does not hang down inside either. www.vintageair.com (http://www.vintageair.com) . There are several other aftermarket A/C co's often mentioned here. Do a search of this forum & interiors.

I have never done this, but from other street rod people I have talked to, you will have to dig out the old sealer on the firewall, and weld up that seem, grind it smooth and then do your mud work, that should keep it from cracking. Im sure somebody here must have done this before.

I've seen this done by welding up the seam and heater holes then using body filler to smooth the firewall. I've always wondered what is done with all the screws that protrude through the firewall from the inside of the car! How do you attach that stuff if you can't screw it to the firewall?????
Another approach I've seen is to take a piece of sheet metal and cut it to overlay the firewall with openings for the master cylinder bracket. The sheet metal is then welded over the firewall and the joints are smoothed with body filler.
I also would like to hear what others have done.

Thanks guys for all your help. I'll look into the A/C setup you referenced. I kind of like the sheet metal approach, sounds like it may be the simplest.

What type of filler have you been successful with in the past? Any good brands?
