Has anyone else noticed the new driving techique out there? The one where you are doing 5-10 MPH over the speed limit in the slow lane and someone has to pass you at 70-100MPH and then proceeds to cut in front of you and then slam on the brakes to do 50!

Yeah that's an export from the south. They're pros at that down here. Then when you pull out to pass them they speed up again.

That's not a new one, they've been doing that around here for ages.

I also like the one where you are the one going faster, come upon another car (in a different lane) going much slower than you at which point they put their foot to the floor to stay ahead of you. These are the most fun when you know there's a cop up ahead, you keep accellerating and get them to go as fast as they can, then jam on your brakes, hang back and watch them get pulled over. My wife hates when I do that.

Another new one here is to drive into the intersection, even when it is obvious that your light is going to change and your going to be blocking the intersection. I sat through a complete cycling of the lights the other day because a semi and a pair of ricers sat across the intersection.

The major speed game here is the passing on the right, even on the shoulder but especially in the right turn only lanes then cutting into the left through lane and of course, jamming on the brakes once they are in front of you. This seems to be a young female driver trick.

I like to go about 4mph over the limit, easy to back off and not bad enough to get pulled over by most cops. Maybe even set the cruise control on a trip.

Once had a guy tailgate me, I was in cruise at 59 in a 55, and when the double yellow changed to broken white he passed me, really gunned it as if to show me up. For once in my life some luck, a cop was pulled over at the side just ahead and nailed him.

I just followed the opposite this morning. A guy doing 50 down 3 2 lane highways. I was never able to pass. Then we both turned the same direction onto a 6 lane, and I finally got a chance to swing out and pass, and then he puts it to the floor.

I also didn't mention the build up of cars behind us on this route because of him, and when they all turned onto the 6 lane, they all put it to the floor, too. I set my cruise at 68, and must have gotten passed by at least 6 other cars doing 75+.

Around here depending on what road your on the PD's give you a 14-19 mph leeway, I've been told many, many, many times to keep it under 74!

I have done this several times... Once in a fairly well-know local speed trapwhere we were but up to well over legal speeds, then I quickly slowed down just around the corner from the officer... I didn't wave as I drove by...

I have also done this with the HOV/carpool lane... I had a single rider behind me, and so I hugged the right side of the lane so the guy behind me could not see the officer driving in the #2 lane as we approached... Nailed...

I also was successful one other time, when a single rider in front of me saw the officer in the next lane coming up, but since traffic in the right lanes was stopped, the driver couldn't get over, and instead stopped and blocked the carpool lane... I laid on the horn and started flashing my lights, which I think alerted the officer... I could see the officer pull over and wait for the driver as I drove away...

I have also called several companies when their trucks cut people off, etc... Come on, you are an advertisement for the company, drive courteously... Just Monday some truck was trying to get into my lane, well behind me (2-3 cars back), and instead of waiting, he speeds up, passes 6-7 cars and cuts people off to get into that lane... Only to wait in heavy freeway traffic and save 45 seconds to his destination...

Had another one today.... He sped up to about 80 to get in front of me then proceeded to slow down to 60, I was doing 70. I pull inth the center lane (yup, was already in the left lane) he speeds up to not let me pass and rides right next to the car in front of me in the center lane for a while.

Also... On a 2 lane highway I'm in the left lane little econo box in the right lane. I'm doing my usual 70 and she's going about 40 and decides she NEEDS to be in the left lane, I managed to get up next to her and not let her over.... Needless to say there was NO ONE in front of her for at least 1/4 mile. I'm guessing everyone behind me who were also going the same speed as Me liked what I did.... She highbeamed me as I went by! Not like there are any left exits for her to get off of and it is a limited access highway....

Some days I don't know why I drive....

I like when I'm in my mustang and they do that. I can pass many people reguardless of their attempts... :)

I like the people that change lanes for no reason as you approach, just so you have to move over...

Then there are the people who tailgate me when I'm in the right hand lane on a 6 lane highway and NO ONE is arround. What are they pretending to be in a traffic jam ?!? :)

Then there are the people that HAVE to park their pile of rust right next to your nice car even though you went out of your way to park 6 miles away from everyone. There must be 100 spaces that are ALL closer, but they must park right next to you...

EVERYONE here cept me drives crazy.

Funny thing happened a few years ago, some guy in a jap pickup decided to play "law enforcer" and drive slow in front of me in the fast lane to keep me from speeding.
I got around him and he gets the phone number off my service van and calls to report me.
He didn't know he was calling the owner of the company - me.

nothing new about that technique. driving a truck for years loaded with construction tools. people just hate to follow you even if they can't keep up. even with cruise control on i have had people pass me time after time on 2 lane highway slow down and i have to get over to pass them again. i am guilty of speeding up so the nut weaving in and out of lanes squeezing in almost causing accidents can't pass and proud of it

I'm guilty of that one. Just once though.

This morning I approach a 4 way stop.
There is a BMW approaching on my left also.
It is obvious we will get to the intersection at the same time.
So this moron floors it, knowing I'm going to stop.
He get through first.

Where's a cop when you need one?

What I hate about cops is that cloaking device they have. You know, the one where they dematerialize right behind you? Oh, they're sneaky!

Here is a wonderful So Cal trick on the roads and freeways. You need to change lanes for whatever reason, if you use the turn signal the car in that lane will speed up to block you from the lane, and then hang at your quarter panel  . This is the reason I believe that most in Calif never use the turn signals for lane changes. I have 2 solutions for this problem, in my truck just hit the signal as you change lanes and my favorite which I use with my Monte Carlo or Chevelle, hit the signal let them jockey for the block. Just when they believe they have me block I drop the hammer on them and pull away and in front of them :waving: .

Well think of what you get to see from a truck drivers point of view. Such as when the stop light changes infront of you and you hardly have time to stop as it is. Then the car to your left thinks he has to get infront of you changes lanes to the right even though the left lane he/she is in is empty. He is just asking to get 80000lbs of smash.

Here is another good one. In many states truck speed limit is 55 and cars are 65+. Well many people slow way down even when not speeding if they see an officer. Many times cars that are not even speeding start passing me then see a cop and slide back into my lane making it look as though I am tailgating. But better yet is when they are not speeding see the cop and lock them up causing them to slide infront of me when they were not even going to get in trouble. I will tell you though they just put themselves into alot of trouble.

I pulled into rest area while driving truck and had car driver aproach me and complain I did not get over for them to get onto the highway. Then I say oh are you talking about a few miles back when there was a car to my left I would have had to run off the road. Or did you just want me to accelerate like a car to get out of your way. Much easier for a car to adjust its speed then for me to endager the rest of the motoring public because he does not know how to match speed/merge.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't drive a big rig truck/industrail truck, but it seems like whenever I'm in my burban, which is small to me but does have a 6" lift with 36" tires on it, everybody has to abide by the rule of thumb.....you see a big truck, make sure you do anything and everything humanly possible to pass it and/or get in front of it. Man, if only I had some 4.88s and 4 or 6 piston calipers/brakes, everyone, including myself, would be a lot safer! And I don't mean that I want gears to pass everyone up, but there are times where the stock 4.11s don't cut it when I NEED to get up and out of the way to avoid hitting someone or visa versa. Thank God nothing has happened! And the "big" brakes, well, I'm sure you all know what that's for!

Funny one time I had a guy ask me why I cant stop a Semi as fast as a car since I have more tires and sets of Bakes. I said you have 4 sets of brakes for 4000LBS or less. I have 10 sets of brakes for 80000LBS. I way 20 times what you do but with only 6 more brake sets.
Of course there is alot more to figure into that but it shot that idea of his down.

Most common thing of all is for the dumba$$es to pass you, only to have to brake hard to take an exit or turn-off about one second after they get in front of you.

I'll never understand what the point of that is- too much fuel in their tank and they need to burn some off? Did they "show me who's boss"? Did they "win"?

My local area is an insurers nightmare - I understand that my insurance premium comes with a premium. Besides being a high auto theft area, the locals are particularly good at staged accidents. For the ones doing accident setups with one car (some of them work in teams of two cars) they will pass you up, then rapidly slow down. They do this firstly to see how your reaction is, secondly to see what your evasive moves are. When they get the right stooge they lay it on again and try to make an unavoidable accident setup.

You may think they are bad drivers - but beware that some of them WANT to be hit.

After having to attend traffic school for a 58 in a 45 offense, I would like to repeat what the instructor said several times throughout the course.
LET IT GO
Let the other guy get the ticket or get his car smashed up.
So someone speeds around you only to slow down. Simply move over and slow down & let the joker go.
You think you're gonna be happy when your insurance rates go up or when your ride is in the shop getting straightened out??
Every situation is avoidable. Display some maturity and be curtious.

Let It Go...
Ideally, this would be the thing to do, but just like smoking/drinking/etc, many people do not have the will-power to just back off... Stress can also bring out the invincible feelings we all usually have some times...

I usually try to remain calm, especially when I have my wife and kids in the car (I guess I figure I am big and strong enough to not get seriously hurt, but, again, in the heat of the moment, I forget...

Display some maturity and be curteous
If someone has their blinker one, I go out of my way to let them in... Basically if they are curteous, or honestly trying to make a correction (didn't know which way to turn, which lane, etc) then I try to show then that curteousy back... Its the ones that blatantly try to pass every one, or don't use their blinker, etc... These peopel will NEVER learn unless they get an accident, ticket or something else that reminds them...

I am not a police officer, but it is my DUTY:D

I often have people cut me off, and I usually honk (not lay on the horn, but a short toot to let them know)... Sometimes, after I get the "finger", I realize that some of these drivers are scary (sorry for the stereotype, but many look like low-lifes and criminals)... So I try to back off...

Just about 30 minutes ago, I was driving in the #1 lane when I see this Honda Pilot/CRV (some SUV) in my rearview mirror, used the #3 lane to pass some cars, and imediately cut into the #2 lane and sped up (about 15-20 MPH more than the other traffic... I could see they were going to try to overtake me in the #2 lane (I had a car about 100 feet in front of me), so I sped up just slightly, so they couldn't get by before they ran into a car in front of them... So they pulled behind me (probably within 10 feet at 70 MPH)... A few minutes later, I could see the #2 lane was opening up, so I turned on my blinker and started to change lanes after I passed this car in the #2 lane... I had started my lane change BEFORE this Honda had even passed the car in the #2 lane, but yet they still tried to pass me (I was now on the line between the #1 and #2 lanes... They laid on the horn, but I just kept coming over... As if a sign from above, at the same time, a car went from the #4 lane to the #3 lane (inadvertantly) to block the hondas move to that lane to pass... The Honda moved back to the #1 lane, but by that time I was up close enough to the car in the #1 lane that was previously in front of me...

She finally got by, and sped up to like 90+... Ironically, less than 1 mile ahead I see her in the right lane, in heavy traffic, trying to take an exit... I easily passed her, and could have easily pulled 15+ cars in front of her, but I was going the other way... I don't know why see didn't try to pass all those cars (several of which were semi-trucks)...

Ahhh... thats was fun...

Lately, I see alot of people turn off the freeway and into the gore point/merge lane area just to pass 6-7 extra cars... I was getting on the freeway (so I was in that merge lane), and I saw them pull out of trafffic and pass me on the right... I swear, IF I was alone in my truck I WOULD put one of these cars into the ditch... Unfortunately, I have only seen them when I am in my family van...

Don't Drive In The Passing Lane! Use It For Passing!

Go69
May 12th, 06, 4:46 PM
NiteOWL-your story indicates that you are driving in the LEFT lane when someone passed you on the RIGHT.. Well I have bad news for you... If ANYONE has to pass YOU on the RIGHT-YOU are in the WRONG!

Please tell me that I am misreading what you typed and that you are not one of those CONTROL FREAKS that drives along in the LEFT lane right at, or below, the legal speed limit, who speeds up when someone tries to pass you on the right. If that is you-I beg of you to please surrender your drivers license 'cause you are going to kill somone, or worse someone you **** off is going to kill you.

The LEFT-LANE Larry's (learned that term here) are a BIG problem here in Houston. They are the primary cause why people get enraged and use the right lanes-including the shoulder-to pass people that are blocking the flow of traffic.

Let me be clear-IT IS A CRIME IN THE STATE OF TEXAS to obstruct the flow of traffic in the LEFT LANE. By LAW YOU, yes YOU, must yield to faster moving traffic by getting into the slower moving lanes (this means get in the next lane over to your right). My understanding is that it is also illegal to travel in the left lane for more than 2 miles. The left lane is to be used for passing slower moving vehicles ONLY. Clear enough? Let's take it a little further-if you can clearly see the drivers face in your rear view mirror while you are travleing in the left lane-you are breaking the law! Get out of the way!

People complain about other drivers, and how bad traffic is.. The problem starts with each and every one of us.

Safe driving tips that I am guilty of:
I Never tail gate! Always keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you! If someone is remotely close to my rear-end, or they are approaching quickly from behind, I GET THE HECK OUT OF THEIR WAY!
If someone wants to get around me, I will signal my intentions and get out their way quickly.
I NEVER drive in the left lane UNLESS I am doing at least 10-15 MPH over the posted speed limit, and even then if someone wants to pass me, I move to the right to let them go.

Yes, I admit I am a bad driver because I habitually speed when I can do it without being too close to other vehicles. I have never been in an accident where it was my fault. I have been rear-ended at least 3 times in the last 10 years here in Houston.

The streets are filled with bad drivers, and that will never change. All you can do is be the best driver that you can be, carry a lot of insurance coverage, and learn to cope with other bad drivers.. Remember-they outnumber you!

Everyone should drive like me... P*ssed off at anyone ahead of you, and courteous of anyone behind you :D

I get PO'd when someone holds me up in traffic, so I try like hell not to hold anyone else up. Most of the stupid driving I see is due to an "obliviot" in the left lane stacking up traffic behind them... people get impatient, people start tailgating, and traffic starts to have the accordian effect, constantly on the brakes, and speeding up at the back of the pack.

...all could be avoided if the oblivious idiot at the front would get the F*** out of the way.

Humph. I've been that idiot, I guess. Not usually, but the other day I was driving a camper, I was in the left lane because I had to be, and then I wanted to go to the right lane- I really did, because I agree with Go69's description of how the left and right lanes work- but you know what? Everybody is in such a &%^$*(@@#&% dang hurry that they won't open up a hole big enough for me to get over to the right lane! So when there is a constant stream of ***holes screaming by on the right, well then what choice do I have but to stay put?

But the bigger question is, what is everybody's hurry?
