I just worked on the top motor for my '71. Getting it out was a piece of cake, just loosen 2 fittings and 3 bolts. Only problem was the oil leaking into the trunk when I disconnected the lines.

Don't know for sure, but I think it's probably important to bleed the system when putting in the new stuff. I filled a coffee can with oil, and then stuck 12" long hoses on each hose fitting. put the ends of the hoses in the can, and then worked the top by hand up & down a couple of times. Sucked all that oil up into the cylinders. BTW, I could not find out what the "right" oil is to use, so I used hydraulic jack oil.

Don't know about the cylinders. The top connection looks easy, but the other end is kinda buried.

ATF is what most people use anymore. Brake fluid works too, but you'll lose paint if you have a mishap.

Thanks for the info, is there any way to tell if the cylinders are good, there are no leaks around the cylinders, but there is leaking oil underneath the motor & pump. My thought is to replace the motor &pump unit and see what happens. Is there a file hole on top of the motor pump unit ?
