When I was doing my Elcamino I asked around about primers. I was told never to use primer in a spray can. I'm doing my wife's 87 Monte Carlo SS. The guy at the paint store told me to use self etching primer in a spray can on all the bare metal surfaces. Then use 2k primer over that. Does this sound ok ? Sounds like he knows what he's talking about. He said the epoxy primer on the Elcamino was ok, but it was better to use this etching primer.

Sorry but there is no etch primer in an aerosol can that will do the job of a "real" etch or the epoxy. If you have sanded the car and there are some "sand throughs" you can use the rattle can etch but not too large and area. When I say "sand throughs" I mean little quarter sized spots or the top ridges of body lines. I still feel that if you are going to use a gun to shoot the car, why not just use it to prime these spots?

Thanks, I've got more than quarter sized sand throughs. The top surfaces were cracked up looking. I felt like I needed to get all of the paint off of it. I tried to leave the primer coat as much as possible.

The only time we use that spray can etch is one a very small spot of bare metal that would not merit mixing up some etch and spraying it with a gun. That spray can etch cant do the job that the mixed etch can.

And by all means use an etch primer over expoy any day especially on bare metal. Expoy doesnt have the same rust fighting properties that etch has, etch will out perform expoy...Eric
