Prior to sandblasting a 69 jack I had acquired, I tried to remove the grooved rubber pad that was glued to the bottom of the load rest. Naturally it was dry rotted and immediatly split into several pieces. Is anyone aware of a suitable substitute for that piece. It looked to be fairly heavy duty, with a mesh backing. In addition now that it is destroyed I have no means to determine exactly how big it is supposed to be and where it should be positioned on the rest. Also I was wondering about the sleeve for the lug wrench. Is that a fabric or rubber piece. National Parts Depot lists one for a 69 but states something about being an option. My assembly manual shows a sleeve but makes no mention of it being an option. I would think some kind of sleeve would make trunk storage easier.
The sleeve is rubber. Most Chevelle resto parts places sell them.

I've never heard of a bumber jack load rest with rubber on it. All the ones I've had or seen have no rubber parts. I'd like to see a pic. Are you sure it's an original part? Does the load rest have any lettering on it,
like 69 Chevelle?
I believe the jack is an original . Stamped into the face of the load rest is 1969 CHEVELLE. I aquired it from a vendor at Chevellabration 2000. Pretty sad it took six years to get around to fixing it up,it was pretty rusty all over.but on the bright side it is turning out nice. Maybe the grooved rubber is not an original portion of the jack but I can tell you that it had been there for quite some time. I guess this jack was at one point used for it's intended purpose. Like I said it was grooved with a heavy duty mech material on the back and about 1/8 inch thick. It was about 2inches wide by 3 inches long and was near the bottom of the load rest. I just assumed it was original to the jack. It looked as though it belonged there. I never really inspected another jack to realize the difference. The rubber would have definately reduced scratching the bumper so it was a good idea on someones part.
After taking another look at the load rest I think this piece of rubber would have been near the top not the bottom. I had it disconnected from the jacking mechanism when I removed it and wasn't paying attention to it's orientation. That would make more sense as far as reducing scratching. Also there is the letter P stamed into the face of the load rest approx an inch or two from the other stamping, don't know if that means anything.

Again, I've never heard of any rubber pieces on the jack rest. My guess would be, a previous owner glued something on the jack to prevent the jack from scratching the bumper. Anyone else ever see this??

I have never seen anything glued to the jack either.

I just took a look at the original jack in my '69 and there is no sign of anything ever being glued to it as you describe. I also think a previous owner may have added it to prevent marring the bumper. Not a bad idea really.
