: 68 ss396 air cleaner...HELP!!!
kdoggy May 6th, 06, 2:39 PM I have an original 68 ss396 automatic, power steering, power brakes, factory air conditioning...yes the compressor is mounted on the passenger side!It is the 325 horse engine and I'm trying to figure out which air cleaner it came with!I know it should be a closed element with chrome lid and I'm wondering if the snorkel tube should be on passenger or driver side?It seems like it would contact the a/c compressor if it was on the passender side but I don't know for sure as the engine compartment isn't assembled yet.
Anybody have any info or pic's it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
SuperChevy402 May 6th, 06, 4:16 PM Correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't it just be a regular open element without a snorkel for a '69 396?
Ark68SS May 6th, 06, 4:41 PM Page M35, A27 shows the air cleaner assy and duct work for a 325HP automatic car. The snorkel points to the pass side and hooks to the heat stove mounted on the RH exhaust manifold. Good luck finding the heat stove parts, I believe that they're very scarce. If you don't have an assembly manual, you definitely need one. They're available at all of the regular suppliers or on Ebay.

Anybody have any info or pic's it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!Same options as mine.Compressor and box on the passenger side.Mines automatic think that is what determines if closed or open.Mines closed, with chrome lid.The snorkel is to the rightside slightly sloped down.Has a curved neck that the flex tubing attaches to that goes to the heatstove. All on the passenger side. Can get picture if anyone needs. Can't transfer till tommorrow. This computer won't load for me.Assembly book is most needed for these vehicles.
bradford May 7th, 06, 9:00 AM i picked up a complete 325 hp 396 out of a 68ss and it has the engine code for a 4 speed also. it has a closed air cleaner.
Bill Rose May 7th, 06, 10:46 AM There are 4 different bb air cleaners depending on h.p. The 350 & 375 are open element, regardless of trans type. The 325 4 speed is closed with snorkel but no heat tube. The 325 auto has the closed type with the heat tube. (Also the only bb with no smog.) Both 325 air cleaner snorkels point toward the middle of the rt fender, and slightly down.
Neal Wright May 8th, 06, 7:21 AM Careful when looking ...
'68 air cleaner will point right toward passenger fender.
'69 air cleaner will point towards battery.
Other than that, they look VERY much the same.

Engine Co 396 May 10th, 06, 12:35 AM Where can I find an open element base that fits right for my 396/350? I have one installed now, and the fit around the carb does not seem to fit properly. There is a gasket there, but it looks as if I need another to make it seal properly.

If you can see through the dirt here it is with the flex hose missing.

lcamino Jun 16th, 06, 8:24 PM Bumping this old thread instead of starting a new one.
Page M35, A27 shows the air cleaner assy and duct work for a 325HP automatic car.
This ASM page also shows the extension (p/n 3937791) I need. It's the sheetmetal duct that rises up from the heat stove to the flexible tubing. Can someone post a picture of it? Given the scarcity of these heat stove parts I guess I'll have to fab one, but a picture would really help.
BTW: JC Whitney has 2" corrugated air duct hose that may work to complete your systems. I bought some for ducting the a/c under the dash. See: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10114/s-10101/p-100000172859/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000172859/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000172859

lcamino Jun 17th, 06, 7:29 AM Thanks, that helps a great deal.
The extension piece I'm missing mates to the rectangular receptacle on the stove, as shown. http://members.cox.net/lcamino2/images/eng 003a.jpg
