: Painting over rubberized undercoatings

3M offers two different rubberized undercoating products that can be painted over; high coverage ultra guard and rocker schutz. I like the advantage of the sound deadening properties of the undercoating in my inner fenders, but I want chip resistance.
What paint can be applied over the undercoating that will be chip and road dirt resistant? I think I read in a post somewhere, where someone put POR 15 over the schutz. Any suggestions?

TIA, Kevin

i covered my undercoat with por15. Its just a little glossy but it still looks and wears incredibly well. I dont know if por-15 is really recommended for that application but for a year now its been so far so good . What i like is how easy the inner fenders clean up if u get some grime on them. Good luck.

I saw, on one of the TV shows like "Rides" or "American HotRod" or something, someone shooting body color over a rubberized undercoating and posted that question here, but never got a response as to the products available. Man, that is one long sentence......

Cam,

As near as I can figure it, you cannot paint over the asphalt based undercoatings. 3M makes several, including their body schutz. They make two SBR rubber undercoatings that can be painted over with auto paint. I am looking for suggestions which paint to use over schutz for chip resistance.

3M offers tons of products that basically do all the same thing.

The NON PAINTABLEproducts are:
08883 Underseal Rubberized Undercoating Black
08964 high coverage Body Schutz Black
08881 Undercoating Black
08864 Body Schutz rubberized Black

The PAINTABLEproducts are:
05910 Rocker panel spray tan
05911 Rocker panel spray clear
08804 No cleanup Water based undercoating
08874 Rocker Schutz beige
08949 No cleanup rocker gard tan

They are topcoated right before you apply your baseclear or SS, but after you wait the flash time which varies from 30mins to 1hr.

08949 No cleanup rocker gard tan is my favorite, very durable IMO and the texture can easily be varied with airpressure and gun distance.

I persued this a little last Friday before I left work for the weekend. I came up with 3M's #08964 as paintable where as Sevt's list has it as non-paintable. I called Wesco, our local autobody supplier here and got $17/24 oz. can of 08964 and the application gun came in at $77. I wonder how hte coverage is and how many 24oz cans it would take to do the whole underbody.

All good info, but the question was and remains what paint to use over the undercoating. I want chip resistance for the inner fenders.

TIA, Kevin

Just goes to show sometimes the tech sheets are wrong.

Kevin, either a baseclear or SS(Single Stage)urethane will provide the protection you need.

Or you can even paint them first then apply the clear rocker coating, but doing that tends to darken the color somewhat. Either method will work, some rocker coating are meant to be applied before paint others after. 3M makes theirs to work either way.

Back from the dead......I'm also looking for a similar product to spray the wheel wells.....to reduce sound and to be a cleanable surface.....Any new products on the market now?

Nothing earth shattering. Just use a paintable product. We just shot topcoats of our choice on them. I see no reason to use the POR mentioned. People think that stuff is some kind of magic potion or something miraculous. I don't know anyone in business who ever used it...we never did.

Thanks Scott.......I won't be using any POR topcoat, most likely a single stage urethane.......Thanks again......

Another to consider is Wurth Stoneguard. It is paintable and used in many OEM applications.
