I have a 70 wagon that fills up with exhaust at highway speeds. I suspect its the tailgate seal. I found a source for the windlace and weatherstrip [window] but cant locate a tailgate seal. Is there any alternative other than stick-on 3M weatherstriping?

yellow, this is not a solution, I was just thinking. do you have a rear wind deflector? they are supposed to help prevent that. but we still need to find that rubber seal. I was thinking about finding out what the cross section is and buying a length of it. then cut and splice on the molded ends. if you can even get a good set of ends? maybe a manufacture could make a mold and reproduce the ends? there are a lot of people that would buy those. you don't need a trunk pan do you? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Metro has a place on there site were you can contact the sales dept and ask about parts they dont make. Maybe if they get enough inquires they will put them into production.

There address is www.metrommp.com. (http://www.metrommp.com.) From there they have links to the sales dept. It says they do custom work and if theres enough demand they will do a production run.

I think I may have a couple of solutions for you.

1) Where do your tailpipes exit? Wagons should have the tailpipes exiting out the sides either just in front of or just behind the rear wheels.....to prevent the very problem you are experiencing. That information comes right out of the Feb. 2002 issue of Super Rod magazine, which by the way just so happens to also feature my Bro-N-Laws 69 Camaro that I did the paint and bodywork on.

2) I have a 71 Nomad that I am in the process of Super Rodding and have been inquiring about all the weatherstrips myself.
The only thing I have found so far for the tailgate seal is from Steele Rubber Products.
It is not the absolute correct piece but is apparently the same extrusion (shape) and is sold by the foot @ $4.60 per. The part # is 70-1112-73. I got a quote mailed to me and the description lists it as "weatherstrip, w/clips", so I have my doubts its the right piece, since the piece I am needing fits into a channel on the body just like a trunk weatherstrip.....I'm hoping the description is wrong.
Thats, Steele Rubber Products (704)483-9343.
My quote is from Terry Edwards.
Give 'em a call....let me know what you find out and if it works.

thanks shannon. the factory exited the exhaust after the rear wheels. all of my wagons are done that way. when do you plan on getting this weather stripping? why didn't you have them send you a sample? if you find out anything please fun a post about it.

I hope that everyone else could do the same. click on the link and click on "contact us" word it however you want or cut and past this, Please consider there manufacturing GM mid size station wagon tailgate weather-striping seals for 68 to 72 Chevelle style concours, nomad, greenbrier, concours estate, Buick models and Pontiac tempest, sport safari and many many other applications.

does anyone have a 64-67 wagon that they could get digital pictures of? i need a close up of the ends of the tailgate weather striping so I can compare them with 68-72. the seal that mounts to the body not the tailgate. I would really apreciate it.

Thanks for the photos FO-FDYFO! Looks like 70 is missing some of the seals. Question!,have you ever replaced your vent window seals? They look to me to be a little longer than the El Caminos.

Hey FO_FDYFO, I have a 65 wagon and I'm close to Metro. The problem with my camera is when I try to down load my comp freezes up. If needed I may be able to get a camera and bring the disc to them or the car. Does that help any?
