: Over-fertilized lawn; Damage Control???

I think I F'd up yesterday when I spread some "Weed & Feed" a little too heavy... I used a crappy spreader and couldn't tell how much was being spread until I realized the bag of fertilizer wasn't covering as much area as it was supposed to. I also had a spill in one spot where I had to stop for a bit, and it kept running out of the spreader. What are my options to keep it from killing the whole lawn? I'm sure it's inevitable where the spill occurred, but what about where it was just spread too thick?

No rain is predicted for a few days, so I have some time before it all soaks in.

I will be shop-vac'ing the spill area, but for the rest, what can I do? I figure the lawnmower will help blow some away. Will it help to water the hell out of it to wash it away?

BTW, I'm getting married in 2 weeks, and a lot of people will be coming between now and then.

Luckily, I live in the last house on a dead-end street, so the whole town won't notice :D

how much, exactly? Like, a whole bag?? I think it will burn the grass and cause a bare spot but no permanent damage. If you can still see the little pellets can you gather them up? I'm not sure if water would do anything except spread it around. Heh heh not to make light but this reminds me of the girl in HS who wanted a nice tan face for prom so she sat with a sun lamp 4 inches from her face for 3 hours :D

Your goin to vaccum your front lawn. Now THAT'S funny.

Just forget about it.

IF the grass does go brown, it will not stay dead just like those weeds will not stay dead. :)

Just water it REAL heavy.

That's what I was thinking.... I had to rip up what was left of my front lawn and reseed this year because of grubs.... An Astroturf lawn sounds better every day.

The first 2 passes or so, it went on real heavy... when I realized it was coming out too fast, I stopped in the middle of the lawn :clonk: to adjust the setting (thinking it would quit running out if the moving parts stopped :clonk: x2 ) I think it actually ran out FASTER when I stopped, dumping probably 1/8 of the bag in one spot.

That was the side-lawn, once I got to the front lawn, I think I still went too heavy, but not nearly as bad as the side... I never made it to the back yard, which has the best grass anyway, and doesn't need it... so I think I'm going to have a big dead spot, with a half-dead wide strip a little wider than my house, (side yard + back half of front yard) and lush-green lawn on both sides of it.

Should look real nice... one big racing stripe :D

I'll vacuum up the spill area to get as much as possible, mow the entire lawn, and get the sprinklers going to wash as much away as possible.

No problem at all. Just pick up what you can and apply the water. You will not burn the lawn if you just start applying alot of water, and then get ready to start mowing. If this was in the heat of the summer you would probably burn the crap out of it with the high amount of nitrogen in the fertilizer. Water is the key. Might still burn in the spot that you spilled it at. This happens everytime i have my maintenece crews spread fertilizer. Some new guy always breaks or sets the spreader incorectly. FYI i run a landscape and irrigation Company, ohh and post some pics with you out front with the shop vac.

Using a shop vac on the lawn, that's funny, but a neighbour of ours had to. They were having the ducts in the house cleaned by one of the trucks with the huge vacuums in it. Turns out dust and static electricity don't mix. The truck was a fiberglass cube van, and it exploded, took out a boat, a driveway and tree, and vinyl siding on the house where the work was being done. No one was hurt, but because of all the kids around they had to vacuum the lawn. They used countless bags in the vac's, and used up 2 shop vac's in the process. See Derek, there is a practical side to your dilema. Daren

Kevin and DWJ are right. Water heavily. It's the only good option.

You gotta post a pic of you with the shop vac on the lawn!! If you're getting married in a couple of weeks, let the lawn die for a month or so, you won't have time to spend on it anyway as your day will somehow be filled up with things for you to do......................

doesn't everybody vaccum thier yard? i have a leaf hog, and that's basically what it is. works great for getting crud out of brick work, and trimming hedges got a lot easier, rake into a pile, and leaf hog it. i also had to shop vac, my yard a few years back, when the guy went threw my front yard (after hitting two cars and several brick pilasters), to get the disintegrated car parts out of my lawn.

anyway, lots of water, and toss a bag of seed on top, that way, even if it starts to burn, you'll have new growth fairly quick. i thought i burned my yard a few weeks back, eveything went brown, but i think i had more weeds, than grass, it's back with a vengance, i'm mowing about every five days.....
