Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong area. I wasn't sure if glass counts as body-type stuff, or interior stuff.
At any rate. Our '67 sedan has a badly scratched place at the top of the rear window where some complete ignoramus evidently removed a window sticker with 10-grit sandpaper and a wood file.
Is there something I can do to lessen the severity of the scratches, or (hoping in vain) eliminate them?

See if a local glass shop has a diamond polish or a rouge to buff it out. The diamond polish we get at work is a 5 micron and is to fine for what you need. Try calling around and see who can and will do it. By the way that polish we get is like $35 a tube and it's a small syringe.

Minor scratches can be removed from glass; however, there may be a certain amount of distortion in the glass when finished....the more polishing required, the more the distortion in that area.
Is that to say that you shouldn't do a winsheild? The original blades on my '67 had scratched the winsheild in an arc that can nearly catch a fingernail. It's the original so should I or shouldn't I?

The price of a windshield for a 67 is too cheap to expend the time/labor to remove wiper scratches and end up with a distortion over the same arc where the scratches were. You should be able to negotiate a new windshield for $250-300 installed.
daveseitz,
I will have to check around. Thanks for the heads-up on the distortion. The scratches are so bad it's white opaque in that area---can't see through it. What I'm saying is, I'd go for some distortion over the scratches.
If it were hardtop I'd just go for new glass, but the previous owner told me the sedan glass is about twice the price of hardtop rear glass.

Whatever you do, don't waste your money on a glass scratch remover kit from (a restoration supply house). They don't do squat, even on the faintest scratches, from personal experience.

The windshield is the only laminated glass in the car. It is softer than the heat- treated side and back glass that can not have light scratches buffed out. I have used the kit from the Eastwood Co. Only windshields only can be polished if it is a light scretched with this kit.

I have a decent rear window from a '65 4-door parts car. I know the 4-doors and 2-door sedans used the same back glass in '64 and '65 so maybe it's the same piece for '67 too? If so, you can have it really cheap. I also have a decent set of sedan rear window stainless trim (different from hardtop trim) you can also buy cheap if you want it along with the glass.
