Is there any kind of primer that can be left on all the time. i really love the look of my velle in primer and it gives it kind of a sleeper motif too, but i'm also worried about rust coming back. so is there a kind of primer, or i guess epoxy(?), that i can leave on through rain and shine? thanks in advance

i assume that when you say "primer" you mean the suede look on '30s and '40s rods. it's not a regular primer that creates that suede look, if i'm not mistaken, but something specific for "suede-ing" a car that protects like a typical glossy paint job- you'd do well to ask some people in the rodders crowd- i'm sure there's online sites dedicated to rat rods, they'd be able to tell you. good luck.

Epoxy would be the best primer product to leave on the surface.
But for the BEST PRODUCT period it needs an urethane product. Epoxy has very little UV protection and when UV attacks epoxy it chaulks it out meaning the top layer turns whitish/grayish.

Get a Single stage product and flatten the shine with a flattening agent. Also some paint companies now make a flat clear coat. PPG has one under part number 2060. So if you wanted a metallic blue but with the flat look spray on your metallic base then clear with the flat clear coat...Eric

pardon the butt-in,but i'm about to start a "suede-look"job on my chevelle.whats the best primer for the ppg base-coat/ flat clear-coat over bare metal and repaired areas?maybe use etch first, then what?i'm a little concerned about using epoxy primer since i heard its hard to sand?i've got some fiberglass filler-repaired areas(temporarily spray-bomb etch-primed) and some rusted areas to repair and prime over before painting.does ppg offer a complete prime/paint system for my situation?thanks.i'm really hoping for a basecoat/clearcoat job in "suede"if possible.

If you try a search you'll find ALL the info you need on PPG primers.
