I figure it's not going to be a direct swap if it will work at all but what else would I need to pick up to get it to work? It owuld be going into my 69 convert.

Nope, carriers are different for 8.2, 8.5, 10 bolts and 12 bolts.

That seems like a heck of a deal though if it's in good condition

So it wouldn't work at all, not even if I replace the axles and the carrier (pardon my ignorance but what is a "carrier" anyway?) and any other stuff that is different?

Don't worry about it, i was clueless about rear ends a couple of weeks ago also!

It won't work at all, they are totally different sizes. The rear end housing needs to be a 12 bolt in order to use that posi.

The carrier is that part you are looking at. They are either open, or have a posi or some sort of locker in them. The ring gear is bolted on to the carrier, and the pinion gear is what turns the ring gear and the carrier. The axles are also different sizes. 10 bolts have 28 spline, and 12 bolts have 30 splines. Other guys please correct me if i'm wrong.

That is my simple explanation of the rear.

ah I see, so can you replace the housing and make it work or at that point are you just better off finding the whole rear axle assembly at a swap meet?

When i say the housing, i mean the whole rear end. So yes, you are better off buying a new rear end. I was in the same boat as you are in, and i came accross a hell of a deal for 12 bolt from a Monte and picked it up. You can still find some deals if you keep an eye out.

Ahh Ok I figgered as much. With my luck I'd end up buying the whole thing to get the one part I'm missing if I tried to piece it together. Thanks for the input :beers:
