: What's up with my parking brake cables?

My parking brakes do not work at all.

Today I crawled under the car to see what I could see. What I found was the re seems to be an awful lot of slack in the parking brake cables.

If the e brake is pushed all the way down it takes out most of the slack but not enough to even begin to activate the e brakes.

I see there is an adjustment on the main cable that comes off the pedal. However even if you threaded the nut all the way down it still wouldn't take the slack out of the cables.

The e brake doesn't come up when the lever is pulled either.....not sure if this is attributed to the excess slack in the cables or not.

There are new rear brake shoes.

Is there any kind of adjustment inside the drums to take out slack? I really want to have these things working incase the brake decide to not work one day. I don't like to skimp on safety items.

you may be missing the small hooks.
or large hook, on passenger side, is in wrong position.
what kind of car do you have?

71 Chevelle 2 door

I think I may be missing those hooks as I don't recall seeing any hooks at all.

Where do them clips hook to anyways? The illustration is not telling me what I want to know.

Thanx for the link.

Look about 6" to the rear of the end of your transmission and you'll see a rectangular channel about 2" wide by 1" tall welded to the floor board of your car. It extends roughly to the frame on either side of the car.

Near the outer end of that channel on both sides of the car is a hole ( I believe it is an oblong hole.) The two double ended "J" hooks connect your emergency brake cable to those two holes and take up the slack in your emergency brake cable such that the cable adjuster will properly tension the cable.

Cool. Thanx for the info. Now I gotta find out where I can get some of them hooks. I don't guess Advance/Autozone/Napa/Car Quest carries them? What are they called anyways?

I found some pics of the underside of a members car on the board here somewhere. I have the pics saved in "My pictures" but I don't know how to post them.
