I have a couple of cheap paint guns now, one HVLP and one high pressure. I want something better, maybe a SATA.

My compressor is a Sanborn 220v 5 HP $500 oil-type unit with a horizontal 20 gal?? tank on wheels. I know it is not the best, but it runs well and I'd rather not replace it.

SATA makes both gravity feed and suction feed (cup below gun) HVLP units. They seem to need about 15 CFM at 40 to 45 PSI.

Will these guns work well with my compressor, or should I be looking at something that uses less air? If so, what would you suggest?

Thanks for your help!!

David,
I am by no means a pro when it comes to paint, but the I know that Sharpe makes a few HVLP guns that are excellent when you don't have the proper air supply. The Sharpe Platinum and the Sharpe 998 HVLP pressure feed, which I have, requires only 7.5 CFM (@ 50 PSI). The best part is that you can buy one directly refurbished from Sharpe at a big discount. You can get more info here:

David, you might me a little light on the compressor side to run a 15 cfm gun. A larger or a secondary, captive tank may help offset pump displacement a bit. When I had my body shop, and at home, I've allways had two-stage compressors with 80+ gallon tanks.

Check out Sata RP,I bought mine when they first came out and know they advertised 9.3 cfm.Tank might be a little small on your compressor too.Mine sprays fine at 20 to 23 at gun. Mike
