: Hi UDHarold. Quick question please.
bigbird90650 Apr 30th, 06, 2:43 AM I need some came advice. I am on the verge of buying a cam for my new engine. I have a fresh .030 454 with 10 to 1 comp, forged crank, forged 7/16 rods, forged Speed Pro pistons (L2349F30)with 0.221 in. domes, 049 oval iron heads with mild porting and 2.06/1.72 valves. Performer RPM Air Gap, 750 Holley Double Pumper (Probably need an 850 huh?), 373 gears. No stall yet. I need help picking a cam for it. Some people swear by Comp and some by Voodoo. What do you recommend? Thanks Harold.
UDHarold Apr 30th, 06, 4:02 AM Is this a trick question or what? Some people swear by Comp. I generally swear at them.......
As you know, I am the designer of the VooDoo cams, so I'm going to recommend a VooDoo to you.
The 750 is OK, you should try it first. You've got a 10:1 engine, 049s, etc, and a 3.73 rear.
I'd put a VooDoo 60204 in it, their 276/284, with 233/241 at .050, .554"/.572" valve lift, and a 110 LSA. That cam should make not less than 475, and up to 525, BHP, depending on how your heads flow. Certain West Coast dynos add about 50 to 60 BHP to what I'm saying.
I would use a 3000 SS converter, and you will need, as a minimum, a good Carter 172 gph fuel pump, or the Holley equivalent, and 1/2" #8 fuel line all the way from your fuel tank to the carb. Running a stock pump and line, or even a 3/8" line, lets the carb run out of fuel in the float bowls around 5000.
You didn't mention car weight, but your car should run low-12s, mid-to-high 11s, with this cam and combo.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, says this is a lot better than the XR274H...

Quote of the Day!!
9SecBuick Apr 30th, 06, 11:50 AM I ran the "original" UD, 288 296 238 242 dur. 550 575 lift in my first BBC. It ran strong, with 3500ss TH350 3.89 gear went 12.1x's at 110. That was with an out of the box 0-9381 830 cfm carb. In a 3600lb. car
SSx3 Apr 30th, 06, 2:15 PM As far as the fuel upgrade recommendation, I learned the hard way a 3/8 line and a 130 gph pump will not keep a 468 with a UD 288/296 solid fed over 5k. So when Harold says "upgrade the fuel system" even if it just line ID listen :D
bigbird90650 May 1st, 06, 2:58 AM Just as I've heard, Harold is the Man. Thanks alot Harold. My engine is going to go into a 4300lbs 1984 C20 truck. That is the only thing I have right now. Eventually, it will see life in either a first gen Camaro or 70-72 Chevelle. I am just a poor white boy living in "can't afford to live here-ville, California" I sincerely appreciate the help Harold. Do I buy that cam from you or just any retailer? What springs, locks and retainers do you recommend for the 60204? Thanks and God Bless.
Harold Sutton May 1st, 06, 7:51 AM A 4300 lb. truck will slow that engine down a bunch. Look for 13s at about 103 instead of low 12s at 110. If it runs 12s it's doing real good. One thing's for sure, it's going to cost a bundle to drive at $3.50 a gallon.
UDHarold May 1st, 06, 9:53 AM This cam, and its brothers, is available from companies like Summit and Jegs, at their prices. You want the following:
60204 VooDoo 276 cam
65001LUN Kit with lifters, springs, retainers, keepers.
I do not keep up with their prices, and I am in no way related to the company now. I work for another company, but just believe in my past products.
In other words, I make no money off this sale. I just want you to have the best there is, right now.
The car is a little heavy. If you think you need a smaller cam, the 60203 VooDoo 268 is the next one. It would be the smallest I would recommend for a 10.5:1 CR BBC. I have driven the 268 VooDoo around Bowling Green, installed in a 355 SBC. It is very responsive and with a very wide torque curve. It would get by just fine with a 2500-2800 stall converter, which would help your gas mileage a little.

fowl69 May 1st, 06, 12:08 PM I dont mean to jump on a thread but I to am putting a big block in a 85 chevy truck and its a 468 with 10.5 to one demon 850 dp and 781 heads and was wondering if there is a voodoo solid flat tappet
UDHarold May 1st, 06, 4:04 PM To the best of my knowledge, no. They were designed, sample cams made and tested, and then I was fired.
If you want to know if they are available, call Steve at 662-892-1526. You may have to wait, Steve is a little over-worked......
My old stuff is available though, go to their website, and look. I just listed a good selection on another thread here on Team Chevelle. Until I bring out my own line in December (or a little earlier), these are the best BBC solids around.
